  • Newbie : Help with buying products please

    Afternoon All,

Dare I say, this is the 1st time I have bought a car (white Ds3 with pink roof/wing mirrors) and wanted to look after it from the start! I'm usually a wash and go kind and I mean not by my own hands either  I had never even heard of the 2bm never mind car detailing until a few weeks back (yes, sheltered life haha). Anyhow, in the last week I have been buying some bits ready to get started and wanted some advice regarding what needs adding to the collection and if the things I am planning to buy are the right products or if there are better things out there that would be better value and do a better job. Also anything I haven't mentioned that you think I would need or even things I am planning to buy that you think I wouldn't need with it already being in the kit, only with me starting from scratch so to speak I opted for a kit with various things to get me started. So here goes.......

Lambs wool mitt (delivered this morning)
2 buckets with grit guards (ordering today)
Autoglym the collection, bodywork, wheels and interior ( due for delivery, what other items required?)
Microfibre drying towel (where to buy and which are better?)
Microfibre cloths (where to buy, read that there are some that are inferior to others)
Applicator pads (where to buy, which are better, how many required? Sponge/foam makes me cringe though when touched, any other suggestions?)
Iron X (where to buy or other options?)
G3 pro body prep clay mitt (due for delivery)
Microfibre noodle mitt (are they all the same? Where to buy?)
Wheel woolies (is 1 sufficient or do I require the set of 3?)
Glaze (Meguiars #7 show car glaze is this needed and what are the benefits of a glaze?)
Sealant/wax (after doing a bit of reading I'm assuming the autoglym egp is both of these combined?)
    Qd (power maxed?)

I can see this turning out to be VERY expensive......hopefully though the regular posters/forum members will be able to help save some money on me buying the right products rather than me buying the wrong things or things that I'm not going to require.

    Thanks
    Emma

Microfiber cloths. Go to costco, big bag of like 30 for £13. Nothing wrong with them. I use them like twice and bin them.

If you're using a lambswool mitfor the body what are you using the noodle mit for, I see you're getting wheel wands too. I'd use the noodle mithe for the wheels and in that case you can get one from Tesco or halfords. All the same thing. Tesco call them dusting mits.

    Autoglym qd is good.
Valetpro dragon's breath is a good alternative to iron x
I'd add autoglym super resin Polish. Always handy.

I got a microfibre drying towel from amazon for fairly cheap. Big old yellow thing. Amazing

Yay, hi fellow pinky! mine is black and pink I feel the same about keeping it clean; my previous two cars were silver, didn't really show the dirt so I wasn't that bothered about washing them. My DS3 is the first car I've ever bothered polishing, waxing etc!!

If you want to try products before committing to full size bottles, you can buy samples from Clean Your Ride (http://www.cleanyourride.uk) Andy is a forum member here, and this thread (http://www.ds3club.co.uk/showthread....l=1#post144748) has some really useful information
Current: DS 3 Performance, Perla Nera Black with Sparkly Purple roof
Previous: DS3 DStyle 120 VTi, Perla Nera Black with Fuchsia roof

Lol Kat, I wanted the black with pink roof but this one was hard to turn down at the price/mileage (bought privately). Must admit was sad to see my old car driven away Sunday evening but can focus on my new car now All the products can't come soon enough so I can get started (just need a good day without rain :mad

I have read loads and loads of Andy's advice/recommendations on here on different threads and that was the starting point on buying a lot of things. Very informative and good write ups. That particular thread I must have perused a dozen times plus and counting haha.

One thing you will need having a white car is a good Tar remover. Trust me, as soon as you see one spot an start looking you'll see LOADS!
I use either ObliTARate Or the Intensive tar remover by Auto Glym.

            This one is great too
            http://www.autobritedirect.co.uk/ind...e-remover.html

I apply and let it dwell a bit before using an old soft cut up T-Shirt to wipe away (then throw the rag away)

Autoglym the collection, bodywork, wheels and interior ( due for delivery, what other items required?)
Get a good TFR too before washing, the Power Maxed products are great:

            http://www.powermaxed.com/clean-your...c-film-remover
            The touchless wash - http://www.powermaxed.com/clean-your...r-jet-wash-wax

Always go for an acid free wheel cleaner.
Depends what you want from a shampoo. But my favourite on my white DS3's is the Gold Class by Meguiar's or banana gloss from AB
            http://www.autobritedirect.co.uk/ind...s-shampoo.html

Microfibre drying towel (where to buy and which are better?)
The mammoth ones are the best, blue with a red trim - But do your googling. A lot of places sell the same one at different prices!
            http://juicy-details.co.uk/cloths-bo...wel--322619937

Applicator pads (where to buy, which are better, how many required? Sponge/foam makes me cringe though when touched, any other suggestions?)
You can get the micro fibre covered ones? The sponge are quite dense, kind of like foundation sponges. So aren't too spongey

Iron X (where to buy or other options?)
Most places sell this now - Power Maxed, Juicy Details, Auto Brite. Don't get too hooked on the Iron X brand as they all do the same. The Auto Brite one is really good. Word of warning, they do all smell like burning hair. Its vile.

            http://www.autobritedirect.co.uk/ind...n-remover.html

Microfibre noodle mitt (are they all the same? Where to buy?)
I got mine from Juicy Details, very soft
            http://juicy-details.co.uk/cloths-bo...dle--261916522

            Qd (power maxed?)
Yeah, there's is great. And there are loads out there again. I use megs or berry http://juicy-details.co.uk/exterior-...00ml-192898267

Dodo Juice Light fantastic is a great wax on white cars

You'll find who you like to use in time
I tend to stick with Auto Glym and Juicy Details. But there are sooooooooo many out there! Chemical guys have some really nice things too.

Thanks for that. I've ordered majority of things now bar a few. Trawled through lots of forums reading people's opinions over last couple of days and there are some products that people seem to rave about more than others. Total mine field lol, LOTS of choice which is where the problem lies with me being slightly indecisive haha. Regarding the tfr.....I haven't ordered any of that.....I went for the valet pro citrus apc to use as a pre wash, would this not suffice?

P.s I've taken note about good tar remover. It did my head in on my old car which was yellow but I not tell you what I used on that

Yeah, they all do the same job I used the Power Maxed one or the Auto-Brite Citrus wash Road grime and salt in the winter ang bugs and pollen in the summer!

                Let the guessing commence!

My ex used weedol on his last car to get rid of the moss........
