  • Swirly paintwork thru washing - how u get rid swirls?

Having never put my Ford Focus (Last motor) through those plastic rotational auto car washes, I didnt really think about putting the DS3 (Only 6 week old) through one of these new fangled £10 a go car washes to keep it spickly/sparkly.

I did and ended up with those tiny swirly scratches when you get real close to the paintwork. Now I'm not gonna get hung up on themcos you can hardly see them, but wondered how to get rid if I wanted too?

Is there a polish that could do it? T-Cut in the old days was good but it so by taking some paint off with it

Do swirls have to be machine polished off? Ive also heard that even microfibre cloths can add swirls- are those cloths a no go too?

They'd need to be pretty deep/extreme swirl marks to need to machine polish them out of new paint!

I use microfibre clothes for buffing off Polish and Wax, not had any issues with them. I do tend to go for the softest clothes I can find however.

Give it a polish with some decent polish next time you wash it (I use Autoglym Super Resin Polish) and then wax afterwards.
Let me know how you get on!

Oh, and never use automated car washes!!

If they are not that bad and you're not to bothered you could try Autoglym Super Resin Polish. It contains fillers that will disguise the swirls.
Used properly it can be quite effective, read the instructions and work it properly.

Just one wash can inflict swirls galore!

Poor wash technique is the most common cause of swirls and other nasties (all robbing your car of depth of shine, so you're right to be bothered by it in my opinion!). Never let a sponge near your car nor a chamois leather. I could write loads here but better to refer you to www.detailingworld.co.uk where you can indulge yourself on correct wash techniques and all other things detailing!

Ref one post above, the best microfibres will inflict swirls if used on anything except completely clean paintwork (i.e. after washing). It doesn't matter how new the paint is, in my opinion most brand new cars are prepped to a very poor standard and often swirled before leaving the dealers...(they simply rush the prep).

I could machine polish them out for you, assuming they are not too deep (what can look bad can often not be too deep). Probably around a 10 hour job for 80% plus correction.

Here's a few examples of the results of machine polishing (only needs doing once if you then wash correctly, perhaps with a minor machine enhancement every so often):

              Best Regards,
              Clive.

Fantastic stuff Clive. You spend more hours than I do cleaning your motors!

Thanks for suggestions- will give the Autoglym polish a go- Do you then wax on top for protection or extra shine?

If autoglym are at the NATIONAL meet then mebes they can give advice

May try machine polish at a later stage but seems a lot of work for blemishes u can only see from less than a foot away

Or could just buy a new DS3r and clean with a fast jet hose only- dont tell me they cause swirls too?

(Sure they'll give advice on their products - some of them are very good products, they aim at the mass market. SRP is superb, very filler hesvy but you need to work it in properly for the best results and minimal dusting if used properly)

(Whilst you can only see them up close or under lights they rob your car of depth of shine from all distances, it's not that they are visible, they make light reflect at random angles and create dullness - look on DW in the showroom or my links to see the real differences - ps you need to 'learn' to machine polish.........ps I love the 'work' of doing it, yes it's OCD)

Or could just buy a new DS3r and clean with a fast jet hose only- dont tell me they cause swirls too? (No a hose wouldn't cause swirls but neither would it clean it - by the way most cars are delivered with swirls!)...
