  • Winter Washes

    Hi All
I have the white Ds3 with black roof. A nightmare to keep clean. With the latest frost and low temperatures during the day they are impossible to wash due to the freezing weather, however one trip to Chester on the dirty wet wintery roads makes it look as though Ive never cleaned it.

I tried a quick rinse but the black crapp from the road spray doesnt move without a full on clean

What does everyone else do to prolong the cleanliness of the car.

What you need is a 'Winter Wreck'! You'll be amazed at how many folks come in to see me at this time of year looking for a cheap trade-in thats £500 or less to use over winter, as long and it T&T'd they don't care what it is.

What wax would help and if im honest i never can follow if its a polish then a sealer. a polish then a wx or just a polish. the reason i ask is that i have read so many different threads and am a bit confused whether a wax is a sealer or a polish or a polish should always be followed by a wax or sealer.

i hope you understand what i mean. lol

Ha- your as loopy as me pryddie LOL

I learn from the Car detailers but some are very pedantic and specific, suffer OCD, and it gets silly (CliveP excepted obviously......to a degree)
So I just wanna clean car for as long as possible

In my opinion a polish makes cars shine, and a wax repels water (Seals) and makes cars easier to wash (As the water mixed with dirt rolls off easier)

You dont need to polish every time, just wash, dry and its the wax that repels rain and cr+p.

And u dont have to wax every time- 3 monthly me

          Polish - 6 monthly

Never done a clean with the putty stuff- will do in spring

          Just my opinon obviuosly

Chris! Good advice!, hey you're right on the OCD!

                Hi Pyrddie,
Effectively as Chris says, polish alters the surface (this can be from a very basic 'hand' polish to an advanced 'machine' polish to remove all swirl marks caused by bad wash technique (i.e. sponges and leathers)).

A good wax helps repel water and dirt builds up more slowly and makes cleaner easier.

In the winter 'snow foam' comes into its own. My favourite is Autobrite Direct's Magifoam - this is like a shaving foam that is applied via a specialised snow foam lance which is connected to your pressure washer (snow foam lance also available from Autobrite, you let them know the make of your pressure washer and they supply the foam lance with the correct connector).

Magifoam sits on your paintwork for 15 mins plus and if you have a half decent pressure washer, when you rinse it a lot of the crud will go - you can then either accept it as it is (without drying) and walk away with the advantage most of the muck has gone....or then wash using the 2 bucket method as normal - the advantage is the chances of swirl marks has been reduced as there is less muck on the car.

                Hope that helps,
                Regards,
                Clive.

Thanks very much Clive I really appreciate this, I believe my wife has purchased a snow foam lance and super snow foam as part of my Xmas box (yippeeee) she got these as I saw someone near me carrying out a snow foam wasj on his Focus ST.

However I am so glad you replied as I wasnt sure what time it needs to be given on the car.

Thanks very much everyone your comments are really appreciated.

                      Chris, indeed, Lol!

Pryddie - glad you've got that - if the foam disappoints, upgrade to Magifoam - it dwells much longer than the average snow foam (which can only dwell for minutes) - Magifoam you want about an inch in the bottom of the snow foam bottle, top with water, then apply to car at a thickness which means it doesn't just run off (two thick and it will 'blob off'!).....You adjust the thickness with the '+' to '-' dial on the top of the foam lance.

                      Really recommend Magifoam!

                      Regards,
                      Clive.
