  • Temp gauge wierdness

Bit of an odd one today. Was driving back from Alton Towers and after the car had been running for about 10 minutes the temp gauge went back down to almost cold, then a second later it shot back up to the middle 'normal' position (pointing straight down). then another second it was back to cold again then back to normal... you get the picture this went on for about 7 times.

Stopped the car checked all the fluid levels, all were perfect.

Anyone got any ideas? it was fine after that little episode.

Faulty temp sensor probably. Quite a common problem and there's a few threads on here about it.

Yep- as mk2k41 says, sensor more than likely. Fairly common, if that helps

I have it too. Had it since it's first service back in April. Doesn't worry me for now.. But more disturbing, since this weekend, when I do a cold start, I get a lot of smoke for a few seconds.. :-/

As stated, possibly a faulty temp sensor. As it seems to flick up and down, may be a loose connection too.

It will be the temp sensor failing at the early stages. When it fails it will go to the max in the red, starts beeping at you and on the dash will be a Engine STOP light on. Radiator fan will be on constant. You need to get the temperature sensor replace now.

Good point, have to watch out for that. wonder if they check connections by removing the pins etc etc.

I was told it's common and the older sensors are fine!! All sorted very quick though

older sensors are able to be swapped out without taking anything else out, newer models the sensor is part of a housing and the whole plate has to be removed as the sensor is inside.

Does anyone know when the newer ones came in? Or is it easily seen (The housing)
