The 2nd generation THP engines with the dual vanos camshaft technology, courtesy of BMW, do offer marginally better protection from the issue from excessive carbon deposit build up on the inlet valves, this is down to the variable valve control (lift) of the inlet valves, 0.3 - 9.5mm of valve lift,

The PDF Toxic linked to says that only the 205Ch version has variable valve timing on both inlet & exhaust & variable inlet valve lift, which the 120VTi has always had. The 165 stays with just variable valve timing on the inlet side.
