  • Petrol in diesel

So I've been in Florida for last two weeks..had an amazing holiday.. So on the journey home we arrived in Manchester at 4am, dog tired..I picked up my car and started the long drive home to Scotland .. On holiday I hired a Chevy Cruze ( petrol )..so guess what I done when I stopped at Abington services for fuel..yep I did. I put petrol in my diesel car. Was back on the motorway when the car coughed..I new immediately what I'd done, was so tired I was on autopilot.. Nursed the car to Hamilton, once I stopped the car wouldn't start again. Called a company out " fuel drainer" they came out drained all the fuel lines drained the tank, cleared the engine management faults refueld car and got it started..excellent service..cost £130 + vat + fuel..could have been much worse.

You certainly got off lightly there pal. Mistakes do happen. As long as you had a good holiday at your kids place then that's all that matters👍

Wow - lucky escape there, I've heard horror stories of this before, maybe it's worse with diesel in a petrol ?

Thought the fuel (socket for lack of better word) stops you inserting a petrol pump nozzle?

That was my thought too but it does depend on the age of the car.

I think it does the other way round, im sure the diesel nozzle on the pump side is larger than a petrol, stopping you being able to put it in a petrol car. but a petrol nozzle will fit in a diesel..... I think lol could be wrong

Your correct there's nothing to stop petrol in a diesel the nozzle is smaller on petrol than diesel so will fit anything,I believe there is an aftermarket device which you can get to prevent it happening but I'm not sure

Only had about a gallon or so of diesel.. Put £20 of petrol on top of that..then drove about 30 miles. Petrol in diesel is the worst combination because of the high pressure fuel pump etc..so I think I was very lucky..

Sounds like you need one of those musically birthday cards which you can mount onto the filler flap so when you open it it greets you with Only Diesel Only Diesel.
