Help - engine shudders and a little smoke from exhaust - any ideas?-

I've had my ds3 for 3 years but recently it feels like it shudders a little at 20-30mph - like it's going to cut out. Then sometimes at 50-70 in low gear it feels like it's losing power. Also I've noticed smoke coming out of the exhaust recently especially when starting engine.

Is this a fuel problem or has anyone else experienced this.

What sort of distances do you normally drive, is it mainly around town and short distances? It could be a DPF issue if so.

It's the diesel particulate filter, it's used to reduce the emission levels (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diesel_particulate_filter). If you're only doing short distances when the engine isn't getting chance to warm up fully then the filter doesn't get cleared out and will get sooted up, which in the long term can cause more serious engine damage. Try taking it for a blast down the motorway once or twice a week and give it a bit of a thrashing in order to clear it out.
