  • How long do you intend to own a DS3... and how long, is too long?

Ive had a DS3 since mid 2011 when I got my Red THP 150- which then was later part exed against a new THP 155 same colour in 2013(Sad maybe- but wanted the upgrade engine. lol)
So DS3s for almost 4 years. How longs is too long for the same car- surely variety is the spice of life- or is it DS3 for the next 10 years?

This was after owning a Ford Focus Ebony edition for 9 years. (Thats sad on reflection )

Before that I changed cars every couple years, (Altho company cars for about 12 years till the Inland revenue came along) and contract lease wasnt like it is today back then- pretty much pay up in full or HP

Wondering whether to stretch my wings a bit and get something faster and subtle, and keep my DS3 as back up, or maybe not keep it and go full scale into something fast for a couple years,
and do a bit of changing around. Seems buying outright nowadays doesnt really help, other than as a bargaining tool to reduce price.

DS3s were few and far between in 2011, now as a popular car which seems to be the making of Citroen (Or DS as it is now) but they're everywhere now it seems, down here in the South.

To keep (DS3) or not to keep is the question. I absolutely love the drive, but reliabilty is the issue outside of warranty.
Certainly prefer to keep the DS3 as a back up, cos my mileage averages about 18000, and always using the Mrs car, which needs organising and can be a problem.

Think a lot of it depends on your own circumstances. I have followed the same route for my last 3 cars, which is to buy a 1 owner 18mths - 2 year old car outright, and keep it for 5 years. This way a big chunk of the depreciation has gone, and having been made redundtant 3 times in my life, I would still have a car if it happened again. Saying that though, as I have a more secure job now, I might look at pcp or similar next time round.

No matter what you purchase Chris, issues outside of warranty will always creep up when least expected, they way I see it is, if you want a quick car, dig deep in those pockets and purchase a quick car, just bare in mind, that a relatively quick car is not really a daily driver.

I read and talk to so many who purchase a daily driver, spend money on performance upgrades to achieve a quicker car from their daily driver, then complain when it goes wrong, generally outside of warranty.

My advice to most people is, have a daily driver, and a weekend warrior (funds permitting) that way you have the best of both worlds, a nice comfortable relatively quick car Monday - Friday, then a dedicated weekend warrior to fulfil the speed demon in all of us.

Our dsport + is our everyday car which is on a 5 yr deal, with no end figure at the end of term, whilst I also own a Vw Golf GTI mk5 Edition30 with DSG gearbox tuned to 332bhp, which doesn't owe us anything, purchased outright now 7 years ago, no plans to sell the 30 as its proberly one of the fastest fwd cars on the road and really does give the grin factor and using her just for weekend fun, whilst the Dsport 155 just does the weeks duties brilliantly.
I would of traded for an DS3R but for its bad reputation for disingtigrating !

I would change up for a newer Ds3 in a few years no question .

I have been thinking the same thing, I am seriously tempted by the new Honda Civic type R which is out in a few months. I will be looking at getting one in a years time once all the kinks have been ironed out unless of course Citroen produce a reliable DS3 with 250bhp
DS3 1.6THP DSport with a few bits added.....nickname BB

All this talk of reliability and warranty does make me chuckle.

My car is 23 years old. Rag the tits off it, don't get half the issues I see on here!

Lucky you- maybe I should go buy an old banger
Had a few of them myself before however- not anymore

Czar- point taken, but in my opinion there are a few out there that could suffice both aspects

                Sounds interesting Gaz

Seems like you have the right idea Steve

I am thinking having one paid for outright, the other on a return when the warranty runs out

Just because a car is old doesn't make it a banger.

If anyone disagrees they can discuss it with the heritage museum.

Like to treat myself as the years go by

much to swmbo I tend to change my cars on a 9-12 month cycle I dread to think of how much money I have lost in the past decade on my car fancies.
the plan is to keep the ds3 but I have already been looking a the new 4 series bmw convertible

I think I was quite naive with mine. I thought straight away this is a car that I want to keep after the lease and started making changes to it. Now after a year and learning more about the different types and what I'm wanting to do with the car, Im thinking about returning it after lease and picking up a newer one but it will be a costly move.
So, my intentions at the moment are to keep it, not make any more major changes and see start looking at returning it after leasing.
Next car would still be a Ds3

Ds3 is OHs company car so we'll have it 3 years, have the option to hang on to it for longer but given she's already talking about a theoretical "next car" after 7 months I don't feel it's likely and she fancies a DS4. I own the mazda so probably keep it at least as long as I kept the old car so around 7 years, tend to get rid when they start costing money regularly.

I had my 13 plate DSport+ from new and intended to keep it for three years. After approx 16 months I realised that I could not wait to get my hands on a Techno with the new lights and wheels. This one is theoretically supposed to last me three years. I am already looking for my next one after 5 months.

                            Regards Tbart

My plan is to keep it at least 6-7years. Maybe I'll want to keep it forever even when I buy something new, since this is the first car I bought. I think it's nice to still have your first car around somewhere when you get older.
