Possible attempted break in to my car

Ok, the wife has just noticed somebody has cut into my rear bumper just above the number plate but below the rear door latch area. Several Stanley Knife type cuts and then one that goes clean through.

Could they have been attempting to open the rear door this way?

Would seem odd, its not another car scrapped it and in the process cracked the bumper?

Ive not seen it myself and im not home until Wed morning but im told it looks like knife cuts. Im thinking something has fallen on it maybe.

Ive seen something similar to that before, it was after someone went into the back of my brothers car, it essentially punctured the bumper on the metal cross member behind the bumper, but the bumper popped out again after. I'd be checking the boot floor and underneath if you can.
