Hey Zack, Remember That Time When You Were Doing 80 + Your Wheel Fell Off ?...
This happened to my girlfriend a couple of years ago. She was a passenger with 3 of her friends. Wheel bolts sheared off (overtightened) and wheel came off whilst they were doing 70 on a dual carriageway.
Tragically the car hit a tree and her best friend sat next to her was killed instantly. Girlfriend spent the next month in hospital with a shattered pelvis.
She's made an amazing recovery but finds it very difficult to be in the back of a car now.
Zack you're very fortunate - it could have been a tragedy.
Bearing in mind that any speed over the designated speed limit is an absolute offence as as such a police officer is well within their rights to charge a driver if they were doing 31 in a 30 fo example, a lil exessive i know. Just been reading some of my books on rtos

Thats correct. The 10% rule is a guideline only. You can be prosecuted for doing any speed over the speed limit as stated above.
Kinell - it's a good job that wheel didn't take out anyone on the other carriageway!
From what I've read above you fitted wheel spacers? Dodgy things at the best of times - if they're just a spacer ring with longer bolts then they move the wheel out so that it no longer rests on the machined surface of the hub, which centres the wheel and transfers load from wheel to hub, then all the loads are transferred directly onto the wheel bolts - which is not what they're designed to deal with.
I gather that hubcentric types are reckoned to be OK but my advice would be to chuck 'em away - you could well be driving around with invalid insurance if you don't
Glad your alll right mate. looking at the pics Id expected to see worse. Having driven an EXTREMELY low and heavy modified OLD vehicle (62 bug) ive seen others have wheel bolts snap from over tightening on shite bolts.... not fun esspecially when your as close to the ground as you can be!! if it IS a bolt issue from the manufacturers then get in touch with them (I know you have) Especially if you tightened them to the correct specification... Where they a reputable company? i had some shite components over the years for the bug - speciaifed as NOS or german quality and its been pants!!
I once had a very expensive set of body bolts -litteraly that hold the body onto the floorpan. I fitted a few and realised they were completely cheap crap that i could almost pull the thread off with my hands!! so they went back and spent double on a set of original NOS bolts.. when its holding the body on i guess I wanted it to be right... even more so with the wheel bolts!!
glad your all right though. could have been a lot worse.
