New Post 05/2015 DSport - THP 165 or BlueHDi 120

Would appreciate some views on which to go for based on my miles / year. Don't really need the 165 performance so the BlueHDI 120 initially sounds ideal however, the car's only going to be doing 4K / year max (mostly steady short runs - about 10 miles each max with possibly a 50 mile run every couple of months and two 300+ mile runs twice a year).

I've heard quite a few stories regarding low mileage diesel filter problems and wondered if this is the case with the BlueHDi 120 engine? If it is, do any of the liquid cleaners make a difference and are there any other pros / cons between the two I should be aware of?

For that low mileage, no point getting a diesel IMO, go for the THP 165 and enjoy the performance

Thanks BeefMasta - looks like it's going to be the 165. Also, didn't make it clear in the original post but we already have a 14 plate DSport diesel whereas the new car's for my mum.

She's 82 hence why the 165 performance is probably not needed - should put a smile on her face. :eek::eek::eek:

Why don`t you go for 1.2 puretech? sounds ideal for your mother.

Agree with Tom, opt for the P/Tech 110 engine.

In regards to diesels there are plenty of stupid stories doing the rounds (Watchdog springs to mind) but the issue is that you MUST use a quality fuel and not the cheap stuff from the supermarkets. Diesels by their nature and with modern filter systems require a high grade of fuel, think of it as beans - There is Tesco value and then there is Heniz, which do you prefer to put on your toast?

I have seen lots of discussion on the quality of supermarket vs branded petrol and diesel. If they are manufactured to the BS specified requirements, then how much difference can it really make? Would it not be normal for a suppiier to make the product to the minimum specification required so as to minimise the manufacture cost? Do you have a direct chemical comparison of the different fuels? If so please share!

There is a lot of rubbishing of supermarket fuels in car forums but I've never seen categoric proof that it's inferior...

Fuel is always going to start a heated debate, I go with experience dealing with customers who suffer with anti pollution faults and 99% of the time their fill on a regular basis with known supermarket brands. After an advised switch to more well known branded fuel we rarely see these customers again.

Now I'm not throwing rock about but supermarkets do tend to buy fuel from lots of different sources which can also have affect on the type of fuel quality, the other point is that where most main stream fuel providers switch over from summer to winter fuel when it gets colder the supermarkets are most likely still buying in surplus summer fuel at cheaper rates.

Yes unless someone does a full on lab test we will never know for sure, I tend to prefer to "err" on the side of caution.

Plus - after 83000 miles on supermarket fuel and no problems I think a little more science is required!
