Apologies Beefmasta , Standard and rather dull cars may be considered a Marmite experience to some. I saw the Tesla/Lotus review on top gear and these had the fun factor included. However I do not consider myself to be an expert on such matters!

I do understand what you mean about the dull cars though, hopefully the cheaper electric models will improve over the coming years. Tesla are announcing something later tonight, which is rumoured to be their 'Model 3' mass-market vehicles.

I doubt they'd be be remapped in the traditional sense, but I know Tesla do over the air updates to improve performance and add features.

To be honest folks, I think they will take off. Arguments about not getting two days commute out of them don't make sense... the idea is that you just plug it in like you do with your phone. The issue comes where you need to do a drive that's longer than, say, 100 miles, which I think is when range anxiety would kick in.
Look at the reviews for the i3 and you'll see that there's lots of positives to be said for these vehicles.
I also doubt you'd need extra performance on a daily basis... the i3 catapults from 0-60 in around 7 seconds.
I'd genuinely consider looking at one and I do 100 miles every day, and there are charging points where I work. But if I'm travelling to visit friends on a long journey, that's where they become impractical for me.
It'll be interesting to watch, and I certainly don't think we should write them off yet. Their sales are increasing fairly rapidly, just look at SMMT's figures...
