  • Ds3 kangarooing going down a carpark ramp

Please can you help I have only had my Ds3 for 3 days and I was coming down a carpark ramp tonight and it kept jerking /kangarooing a bit going down the ramp - I had it in 1st gear = gosh I got a sweat on - i managed to get to the bottom safely and drove off ok. i really dont want that to happen again tomoro - can someone advise me what I may have done wrong. All i did was start the car and drove off within seconds down the ramp in 1st gear?
I need to know what I might be doing wrong as I have to do this every day lol... and I was so stressed by the time I got to the bottom dont want this to happen again. Any advice would be helpful:confused::confused::confused:
(my prev car was a puma so this car is a radical change for me)

Mine does this occasionally going down steep hills in first.

To avoid this problem, I usually do one of three things:
-coast down ramp with clutch in or in neutral
-build speed up enough to get into second
-go faster in 1st (seems more stable with rpm faster than 2200)

I suspect it's an oscillation effect between the ECU trying to maintain an idle rpm setting, and accelerator pedal movement. Delay between these things can sometimes create oscillation.

If your engine has a rough idle, then something else may be contributing to the problem.

I've not experienced this myself, from what you've said the immediate fix (as cameron20020 said) would be to put the clutch in and cover the brake as you coast down the ramp.

I've had that on older cars with less sophisticated fuel injection systems. Over-run fuel cut-off only operates above a certain engine speed; it's possible that if the engine speed is around the threshold the fuel supply will be cutting on & off, resulting in the kangarooing effect.

. . . but then, in Oz you should be used to kangarooing!

Sounds like you'd be safer coasting down the ramp. Clutch in, cover the break pedal.

For me the issue was your selection of gear choice, 1st is really only for very low speed or setting off. You would find it easier to have been in second gear, I wouldn't recommend coasting down the ramp as technically you are no longer in proper control of the car and would also no longer benefit from engine braking.

              Yep,
Had to ride my kangaroo to work the other day while the ds3 was being serviced

I assume you meant to type "I would not recommend coasting down the ramp".

thanks all - ive got used to the car more now someone told me that i need to get my car into 2nd gear going down the steep incline and use brake, i sometimes do that or if I leave it in first gear I just let it go slowly down the steep incline - its a bit slow doing it that way but ive not had any jumping or kangarooing issues since.
(my previous car was a puma and i never had any problems going up or down a steep incline in 1st -because i had it so long I can see now hoe the gear systems have changed alot im behind the time lol..) :lemon:
