  • Secret plan for new DS 3 SUV exposed?

    From Auto Express

New DS 3 crossover model will accompany all-new DS 3 hatch to take on MINI Countryman

The DS brand revolution continues, and with the push upmarket will come a range of new products. The existing DS 3, DS 4 and DS 5 have all been revamped for 2015, but next on the agenda for PSA’s newly formed luxury brand is a DS 3 SUV. Our exclusive images show how it may look.

Citroen confirmed DS would become its own premium brand last year, with ambitions similar to those Toyota had with Lexus back in the late eighties. But there’s been no all-new products launched as yet, bar the DS 4 Crossback – which is essentially a jacked-up version of the revised DS 4.

However, with the demand for SUVs in China and Europe seemingly insatiable, DS is prioritising a more conventional move into that sector. And we understand that a dedicated DS 3 SUV will arrive alongside an all-new DS 3 supermini in 2018.

Given the current DS 3 was launched in 2009, it means a long lifespan for the existing MINI Cooper rival, but the wait is necessary for PSA to design a new scalable platform (known as Common Modular Platform or CMP) as a base for up to 10 new future models.

These include the two DS 3s and even the next Peugeot 208. The investment will come from PSA’s alliance with Chinese state-owned brand Dongfeng. The smaller, sportier DS 3 hatch is expected to retain the same three-door layout as before, while the SUV will get a more practical and roomier five-door design.

Tell-tale DS styling touches include the DS 3’s shark fin panel (pushed back from B to C-pillar), curvaceous lines and chrome-covered hexagonal front grille, but it takes on a more purposeful stance with a raised ride height and body cladding.

Sources say DS has identified the MINI Countryman as one key rival, but that cars such as the Mazda CX-3 and forthcoming Audi Q1 will also be potential targets.

Despite the extra ground clearance, we understand that four-wheel drive won’t be offered on the DS 3 SUV, as it would cost too much to adapt the modular platform from front-wheel drive. Besides, DS claims that when four-wheel drive is offered on smaller, more fashion-led SUVs such as this, it isn’t often taken up by customers.

What we will see are major revisions to the current DS engine line-up, as 2017 marks the introduction of tougher Euro 6.2 emissions regulations. It’s expected the relatively new 1.2-litre PureTech petrol engine will be carried over with only minor efficiency tweaks, but the 1.6-litre THP petrol may see major alterations – or be dropped.

Given the 2017 regulations are set to be tougher on diesels, PSA will have to invest in upgrading its 1.6-litre BlueHDi engines for the next DS 3.

Both cars will be produced at the factory in Mulhouse, France. Details are scarce on the overall cabin updates, but DS’s priority to offer “refinement and avantgarde design” will likely result in improved quality. Rest assured that the company’s distinctive French style will be carried over, too.

Given the premium aspirations of DS, we can expect a starting price of between Ł18,000 to Ł20,000. As a result, it’ll sit ahead of the likes of the Renault Captur, but in line with Mazda’s CX-3.

If they do the 1.6 THP or a more powerful petrol engine, I'll definitely consider it as a replacement when my DS3's finance comes to an end. Not a chance if it's just the 1.2 petrol.

Be interesting to see what they do with the 1.6 THP. Mentions major alterations - makes you think that they are almost realising the history of the engine.

It's a sporty little car and I think they need something to rival the GTI's and sport versions of small hatchbacks out there.

They are ruining it imo :-( I'm becoming less and less of a fan of the DS brand. I first thought it was going to be something special, doing things differently, but they will just be the same boring brand as all the others. I don't think I'll be buying a DS again in the future. But hopefully my current one will have a loooong life, and there will still be many good times ahead!

You know something, that's exactly my thoughts. The advertising is all about being Avant Garde and doing thing different and yet in the background we are going to be doing what everybody else is doing...

Losing the Spirit set out in 2009?

An evocative name: DS, Different Spirit

The new line of products had to have an evocative name that would immediately be associated with Citroën. Logically, the brand turned to its heritage.

Looking beyond its huge renown, the DS name embodies the impudence of a truly French car, bold and non-conformist. In the way that it expresses design and sensuality, distinction and status, difference and sense, daring and savoir-faire, the DS is compliant with Citroën’s identity: a Different Spirit.

The DS name symbolises innovation and success, styling and technology. It is a powerful component of Citroën’s heritage. DS expresses a new approach to cars and a new way of looking at the future. A future inspired by a unique genetic code, passing on the genes of innovation and distinctive design. DS INSIDE is the Citroën experience viewed from the inside.

The future line of products will receive this specific name, together with a number indicating the size of the vehicle: DS3, DS4 and DS5.

Hence why ive stuck with my original back and front lights, in 2009 it was something very fresh, now it is following the LED pack, the design has become anodyne.

While all the marketing is nice they've been doing what mini did since the beginning. For all the hot air about avantgarde this and unique that all they have produced is mechanically conventional cars that are largely slightly reworked normal Citroens. This is not to say they haven't produced nice cars but in essence the brand is there to allow Citroen to sell cars at a higher margin with similar production costs as they'd degraded their brand heavily with huge discounts.

I'm not a fan of this the car looks alright if you're in the market for one but it is no less a DS than anything else produced since Citroen revived the brand. You never know it might have oleopnueumatic suspension and a 1 spoke steering wheel at which lint it would be significantly more DS than anything they currently sell..

Definitely...although I had a go in the DS4 with the massaging leather seats when looking for what ended up being the Mazda and they are very good.

I think they are missing a trick by not making something a bit more like they used to, the car closest in essence from recent times in the Citroen range is the C6. A DS should be a car Jean Reno would drive (borrowed from TG but it sums up for me). But that would be expensive and probably bomb whereas what they are doing now pays the bills.

I agree, sadly these days what was once a fresh and dynamic design seems to be honed and developed into what car manufacturers believe the masses want! Please Citroen, don`t kill off the original essence of the DS3!

I don't think you can complain at DS or Citroen for moving ahead with technology though... they've led the way with LEDs certainly in this sector. They're brighter, more flexible and last longer. I think the LED is here to stay and is certainly not a fad...

I don't think they have moved ahead, they have simply followed, hardly innovative. And the reference to 'LED pack' was more metaphoric.
