Why would you want to give the reg number out ? It's a pain in the ass but unfortunately you can't force the driver to pay for a stone chip

As above unless the X3 was deliberately swerving through a patch of gravel it's just a moment of unfortunate luck. At some point you may have done similar to someone else it's just something that happens.
