  • Buying a THP ds3

    Afternoon ladies and gents,

Not an owner yet but potentially will be very soon. Just thought I'd ask as I'm a bit confused about engines. I know the 165 is the newest engine.

I'm currently waiting on evans halshaw to move a 2014 ds3 thp 155 down from Hull to me. Now I've read problems with thp 150 etc. When I run the reg on this one (DT14AUY) it is showing as 150bhp. So are quite a few others when I run the reg, is this a newer car with the older engine (thp150) in or was it something to do with tax or what?

Coming from a civic, want something a tad smaller, a bit quicker and a bit newer now and I really like the ds3. Just don't want to trip myself up buying one!

If I'm in the wrong section please move me to where I need to be, any help is already appreciated!

    Cheers.

The 150THP and the 155THP's power figures were the same. emissions were better with the 155.

      Welcome

Not sure, could be the limited options they have to input on the site? Generic Dsport 150 (first one) to cover them all?

      150 - February 2010 - October 2011
      155 - November 2011 - October 2014
      165 - November 2014

So a 14 plate is way out of the 150 era.

Have you tried it the other way and run another reg to see what it says? Rather than the same reg on different apps

This is how it shows on a screenshot. I love the ds3 but as many are, I'm cautious of the issues people have. Heard people talking about rebuilds at 3500 miles and things like that kind of scares me a bit.

Sorry, just realised how daft I'd been. The reg you gave me from the same year came up like this...

Thanks for the help guys, car is a lifeline as I work in the middle of nowhere so want to make sure that I'm not buying problems. :/

That bottom one is wrong, actually they both are wrong. What they both had was 156PS(something like 154HP) at 6000rpm and 240Nm(177lb-ft) at 1400rpm Co2 was 155gm/km for the 150THP and 137gm/km for the 155THP. There were car produced for countries that had 150PS for tax reasons but it was really the same engine and just a paperwork lie. Think that was Belgium? Brazil?

I see... I've been playing around with the apps and things for a while now (it's nice and I'm just sat on the back). It looks like all of the dsports show as 156, all of the dsport pluses show as 150.

The 14 plate one I'm going to. See when it gets here has only done 3000 miles which I was impressed with and has the new headlights on it too which is a bonus. God I hope it goes well, just want trouble free motoring as my civic is getting on a bit now and on 70000, only just developing a couple of niggling issues.

I'm assuming a lot of the issues with the thp 155 will have been ironed out by 2014? Don't get me wrong I know you can just have bad luck sometimes, the missus likes them too so who knows, we may end up with 2!

This is true as early cars have software update to the same version as newer models so there both running exactly the same calibrations.

Excellent, so has this solved a lot of the issues or am I just scaring myself with the stories I've read? Naturally there's always people who have a horror story with any type of car.

This has really helped me so far though guys, I'll actually feel like I know what I'm on about (a bit) when I go to see the car.

Yes, we have/had the paperwork lie. One some papers I have a 150, on others I have a 155

About the reliability: I have one of the horror THP's but don't let that hold you back, there are plenty of great THPs with no problems at all! Of course I wouldn't buy one anymore, but I'm super biased.

As you've already realised you only tend to read about the horror stories on car forums, this is because owners don't tend to seek out a forum to say how wonderful their THP (other cars are available ) is. If I were you I'd make sure you read up on all the recent reports on this forum of issues, you can then use those when you test drive the 14 plate to help you determine if it has any of the reported prproblems.

Unfortunately there are no guarantees so all you can do is so the research and then use your knowledge to decide if it's a good buy

                          Good luck
