  • Intercooler relocation

Hey guys, Greetings from Sunny South Africa,

Tomorrow we are installing a down-pipe on my THP and doing some other modifications to the exhaust system and intake, which got me thinking..... We've been noticing that the inter-cooler in its stock position does not seem to get enough direct airflow,
my question is, would it be feasible to move the inter-cooler from a vertical position to a horizontal one so that it sits directly behind the grill thus getting access to more direct airflow. It is
My believe that this modification can only be for the better.

I look forward to your opinions on this matter!!

    Cheers!

Aha Sure, however your thread makes mention to aftermarket intercoolers. I am referring to moving the factory intercooler as stated.

      Thanks

The thread itself though confirms your theory that moving the intercooler to a better position would only be of benefit.

I'm unaware of anybody mounting their standard intercooler anywhere else, although I'd imagine you're somewhat limited for choice.

To answer your initial question, a relocation of the factory stock intercooler from its vertical position, to a horizontal mount position, in front of the lower section of the radiator, could it work ? Yes.

What benefits could it possibly offer for you, well, the final location and ducting of the frontal air flow, to pass the air through 100% of the intercoolers surface face, will determine any potential gain, however, because you have more continuos sunshine, with higher ambient temperatures than the UK, even placing your intercooler as low as possible, you'll still suffer from ground heat radiation, effecting the over all convection, your gain will not be as differential as the same gain here in the cooler UK.

Something else to think about, besides a relocation of your intercooler, how about injecting a water/Methanol % mix solution, pre and post intercooler !!

I really appreciate the way you thought of all the variables of the heat here in SA, I am trying to optimize the cooling of my DS3 as the heat is intense here. For example we are using a thicker oil in the
summer months as 5W30 doesn't cut it. how would one go about researching the best pre/post cooling methods on the inter-cooler? is there any possibility of adding some sort of ducting to improve the
overall air flow on the inter-cooler?

Thanks again for all the help guys.
