  • Engine Fault display

A couple of days ago I started my DS3 (2014 Sport) and got an "Engine Fault - Repair Required" alert. I started the car once more that day and the same message appeared. Next day I started and drove on three separate occasions but didn't get the alert at all. Should I be concerned?

Whatever caused the lights is not happening right now but of coarse may come back or not! I would get the stored fault codes read to see what the computer didn't like those 2 times. Ask around if someone has a code reader nowadays they are very common.

It's petrol - I'll book it in for a check up!

I took the beast to the local Citroen dealer - they said it had a carbon build-up in the engine and needed to be blasted by ceramic bearings, cleaned out and then refilled with special oil! They though it might be because I don't take it on many long trips - only had her for just shy of 2 years and only done 8500 kilometres! It's all done under warranty - they needed it for 3 days. Anybody heard of a similar problem?

Every single owner of a THP DS3, it only takes a day to perform the blast by the way.

That's good. Citroen kept mine 3 days, and when I got it back looked like a bucket dirty water been tipped all over it.

Still, as theyd spent getting on for a couple grand+ I didn't complain

So should I expect the fault to occur again? Do short driving spells make it more common - should I give it regular longer drives?

Mine happened at 20k miles, and yours will coke up again, just a matter of time

Use decent fuel, as its the carbon by product (Soot) that does the damage, so the cleaner burn the better. But no fuel is clean.

I see!! I only use 98 octane fuel. Mine's only done 8500km (5000 miles) in just under 2 years - is that a bit soon for the carbon problem to occur?

Obviously not, given that it's already been reported to have happened

It does help to give the engine a good hard push, so that it gets very hot to burn the soot away, every month or so (Or every week even)

And you could fit a catch can

And use either 99 RON or even 102 RON fuel

To be honest, as a GDI engine you are only postponing the inevitable. Its just a maintanance cost to factor in every 20-30k miles.

5000 miles is a bit low- unless youve just been toodling to the beach at 40kms every day- i know you Aussies
