  • Tyre choices.

Hi, my car is up for its 1st MOT in few weeks time. Needs 2 new back tyres. I have contacted my local tyre dealer and he has given me these options.

The Partworn tyres are all hi grade & branded Michelin, Bridgestone etc they come with 5mm+Tread and are £30 each fitted or we have brand new at £45 each fitted$%^&*#@

What type of tyre would be best to get?

    Cheers.

I would never fit a part worn tyre as you wouldn't know about its provenance.

Has it come from a car that was accident damaged?

I'd always fit new from a dealer with a good reputation.

I guess it depends on whether you value your safety more than saving some £'s

Personally I like the Michelin Pilot Supersports or whatever they're currently called. Softer than some but as a result much grippier in wet and dry. I will be fitting these when the OEM Bridgstones on my new car need replacing.

Pilot Sport 4s have all but replaced the Supersport, they have slightly less dry grip and feel, but significantly better wet grip and much more durable at the same time, while generally being cheaper too.

Brand new tyres at £45 fitted are going to be complete tripe. I put £70 tyres on my DS3 and ended up swapping them onto the back and going back to Michelin on the front as they're the only tyre that actually feels grippy enough. Tyres and brakes aren't something you should spare the pennies on imo.

As someone on £70 tyres also, wear is very good but grip is terribad. Would much rather have some Uniroyal Rainsports or Avon ZZ4s - both excellent wet grip. Look for something A rated for wet stopping distance - most "sporty" brands only have B ratings on their all season tyres.

I never understood the idea of trying to save money on tyres. They are literally the only thing keeping you from ending up in a ditch every time you do anything in a vehicle.

Tyre ratings are garbage too, read some proper, impartial reviews. A Michelin Pilot Sport 4 will beat Avon ZZ4s or Rainsports in dry and wet braking and handling tests, so don't be fooled by the daft EU markings that make cheap Chinese tyres seem okay because "oh, getting a C for grip isn't that bad".

Yes they might cost a bit more, but for a light car like a DS3 a good set of tyres will do 15k miles or more without any issue, spread that £100 a corner cost over 15k miles and it's 3 pence a mile for 4 top quality tyres.

+1 for pilot sport 4s. So much better handling and overall grip. Hopefully the wear will be good and will be a great pound per mile cost 👍

My Pilot sports 3's which have had on 3 different motors were the best pretty much, so would think Pilot Sport 4's be better

Be good to see a review of them

go for new, unless u r moving the motor on

Completely agree with this, not worth skimping on tyres. I've had 30k out of the OEM tyres and I don't treat them kindly. Just made sure to rotate them each service. I can't remember the make / model but I'll find out when I'm home.

I always go with Kumho Ecsta KU39. Very good grip wet and dry. Tried the Uniroyals but found they wore a bit quickly (9k). Current send of Kumhos are on the limit after 16k, have a new set arriving this week
