  • The Dreaded Engine Management Light...

I need some advice as to where to start with this...

I have a 13 plate THP with 32k miles on the clock

A few weeks ago my car started juddering/shaking from cold and got worse over the coming weeks, although after about 30 seconds it was completely fine.
Funnily enough the morning I decided to take it to the garage it was really bad and I set off and the repair needed came up on the screen, I took it and they read the codes as:

    P1336 – Crank cam sensor
    P1340 – Camshaft Position Sensor
    P1338 – Coil pack

After reading up on here apparently this isn't the case because of the generic code readers, they're all actually misfire codes (can someone confirm)
They reset the codes and it was doing the same and the light came back on about a week later, today. Where do I go from here as I am due to give the car back in 6 months which is even more frustrating!

Where do I go from here? taking it to citreon is going to cost me an arm and a leg but will any garage be able to help me that much with this specific problem?

    Plugs/coils?
    High pressure fuel pump?
Carbon build up (i have read up on the walnut blast)

    Thanks in advance

Forgot to mention the fan stays on for 10 minutes after turning the engine off...

Well as it's a THP, anything could be the problem. Have a look at the fuelpressure. Should be 50 bar up to 140bar i think. You can see this with any cheap OBD reader.
Next is the coils. They are independent and you can switch them from one cilinder to another. Check if the misfires follow to bad coil. So put coil on cilinder 2 on 4. ODB reader is needed.
Next are the valves. They will be dirty after 32k. They should be cleaned no mather what.
Timing could be off but that's the last one to check. I got a camshaft error once and got it cleared by cleaning the sensor. But came back and had to replace chain, etc.
Did it get new sparkplugs already? If not, you'll need some after 32k...
It's not much to go on but hope this helps.

From the symptons youve said sounds more as if its the coilpack. Coilpack is very simple to do

          From looking on here P1336:

I got it onto the hard shoulder, turned the ignition off, then on and it drove back ok but "engine repair" appeared on the centre computer.

I had it plugged in at work, fault codes P1336, P1337 and P1338 which is cylinder misfire 1, 2 and several I think?? Changed the plugs and coil packs to be sure...seemed better. But even now it seems a touch lumpy when idling and when I go to put my foot down it just doesn't seem to pull like id expect it?? Its like its pulling back for a second before it goes forward If I make any sense?

I've read abit on here about carbon build up and the like? Any ideas guys?

I have some further diagnosis in the form of three error codes to compliment my engine management light they are:
          P1336
          P1340
          P1338

which I believe to be all misfire codes.
I have somewhat reluctantly took the car to a local garage and they have been unable to categorically diagnose anything, which would have put my mind at ease! Is there a way to diagnose the problem 100% or even 90% so I don't feel so uneasy spending £580 on a Citroen HPFP inc. fitting.
Heavy shaking from engine (feels like misfire), Engine management light on!

There's quite a few threads once you start clicking through links! But those might be a good place to start and I'm sure someone will reply here too

Fom looking as above, Coil Packs and Spark Plugs is the most common fault then fix. Or at least the easiest place to start to fix things.

With both crank and cam sensor codes I would say Chain!

PS. The fan staying on is a "tell tale" service feature that there is a fault stored!

Plugs and coil packs really cheap. Do that. Get the valves cleaned with walnut blast as cheapish and will need it. Hpfp and timing chain are the expensive things it could be. If obd reader says the pressure is fine get the timing kit changed. Bonus is if you do all these things there isn't much more that can go wrong with the thp!!
Ps. I've had to change all these things but car running great and well worth it. Standing quarter of a mile 15 seconds and that's before I do my intercooler and stage 2+ remap
DS3 THP 155 - stage 2+ remap, milltek sports cat and non resonated exhaust system, airtec FM intercooler and alloy boost pipes, induction kit. Mtech short shifter, VAG recirculation valve with uprated alta spring, uprated hpfp, uprated spark plugs, uprated coil pack, VTA twin pcv to filtered catch can, uprated Sachs clutch, ebc brake pads and vented discs, LED interior lighting, rcz gearknob, Michelin pilot sport 4s, iridium spark plugs

I had the same and changing the spark plugs sorted the problem. A few months later the chain did stretch and need replacing though but not sure if that was related or not.

Thanks for your help everyone, in my mates garage now, he's changing the coilpack and said it's sorted. Hopefully that will be all for now!

Coil packs changed and have noticed a difference but I'm still not 100% that it's totally fixed. It still stutters slightly for the first few seconds when you turn the engine on.
Do you think the spark plugs need changing too?

Would have thought your mate would have checked them while doing the coil packs. At your mileage it is possible, as they are to be changed at the 40k service anyway and THPs accumulate carbon faster than the VTis

To be fair I think he did and gave everything a once over but it's still not 100%. Just thought if I've replaced the coil packs maybe spark plugs next port of call?
Really frustrated as I don't know where to go from here and have a feeling it's going to cost hundreds.

As mentioned above you are also due a walnut blast to clear out the intake, so maybe prioritise that first and then see if it's still causing issues.

I think I might have to, annoying as I'm due to give my car back in about 5/6 months, do you know how much this costs roughly?

Not too certain but somewhere in the vicinity of £300?
