  • When to change gear

    Howdy
When is the best time to change gear on the 90HDI to get maximum fuel economy?
We have a Honda Civic 2.2 where 1800 revs seems to be the optimum. Added about 4 MPG to our numbers when we did the change.
Was wondering what it is on the DS3 as one of the reasons im getting the DS3 is fuel economy. (Plus the fact its stunning and cr@ps all over the other cars in this market)
Ive also noticed there doesn't seem to be a huge number of complaints on the fuel economy figures for the DS3 diesels. Nearly every other car we considered had 50% of its threads on fuel economy being pants. The civic which is supposedly good for fuel gets slaughtered on the forums.

You could just change when the car tell you too, DS3's have a GEI which flashes up on the dashboard advsing when to change up.

You'll never get the figures from the brochure when you're on the road, they're measure under controlled conditions on a rolling road.

On the DS3 you get a little number and arrow on the dial to tell you when is a good point to change gear. You can of course go straight through that and just keep going.

Keep it below 2000 rev/min at all times is the recommendation for diesels IIRC. What is the revs at 70 in 6th on the DSport HDI, btw?

Fuel economy, what's that? I just tend to change when the engine sounds as though it's about to come and join me on the passenger seat..

I change when it bounces on the rev limiter - doesn't everyone?

the fiat 500 has the GEI bit, but that just seemed to labour the engine and didn't feel right, might have been the most economical time but felt like i was killing the little blighter!! Is the Citroen's gear change timings pretty good then?

i thought i was the only one who joined all the forums for the cars i was looking! I looked into the fuel economy thing big time and all of the forums complained about poor fuel figures. I think the psa engine is one of the most frugal. The ford and fiat/alfa diesels seemed miles off, also the vw group 1.6 tdi is bad. i know this from experience having bought a new Ibiza sc 18 months ago and got an average of 49 mpg after 15k.

thats quality MPG, if i get 55 ill be one very happy bee! I find forums are the best source of info. i read every single review I can find, but you soon learn they have scripted mumbo jumbo that they have to add. They all love Minis and have issues with Citroen etc. You can often tell they have never driven the bloody thing either, which gets on my nerves. Although the reviews for this car were good I always feel that forums are the best source of info. The fact it costs a few quid to join is nothing for the pure amount of info you gain from them. Respect to the MODs!

                          I change at around 2k.

I mostly do motorways though and find it tricky to keep to 70, I often stick it at 2.5k which is 76 i think.

100 miles in and 54.3mpg so far, hopefully go up when the engine loosens, only to 55 though I reckon, fine for me.

According to the app on my phone 56.4 is the best i have had from alarm to alarm last few tanks, and mostly motorway last few weeks with cruise control and being more economical than normal on my 90.
