I can say that my THP has been better in economy with the higher octane fuel. As for performance, I feel that the car is slightly more responsive. Is it worth the extra cash though? For me yes.
As far as i remember it makes no difference to a normal engine, if you put optimax or whatever expensive fuel in it, you are just wasting your money. Certain cars do need the expensive stuff like my old 1.8 toyota corola compressor with a turbo and supercharger and 230hp, run that car on the normal pertrol and it used to make the engine less powerful and make pinking noises. Everything i have read in diff mags says unless your car really needs it, dont bother its not worth it. I dont remember using expensive petrol when i had the 150thp engine in my Peugeot 207gt a few years ago.
I currently use Shell (normal Fuel Save) Diesel and also BP. I do tend to fill it up once a month with V Power or Ultimate just to clean out the engine. Heard it helps keep the engine running smooth.
I guess what Paul has said is probably more than correct. i think the big brands do sell this fuel for too high a price for what it actually gives back in performance/economy.
I use whatever fuel is on the best offer(price) be that supermarket or one of the brands, currently Esso is around the cheapest locally.
I have used the expensive stuff before but didn't find much difference in performance, although the exhaust did seem a bit cleaner (it sailed thro the MOT emissions test with flying colours)
