I would get a diesel, been driving them for years and personally think they are more reliable. Mine has done 700 miles and I'm getting 53.6 mpg average. Considering the engine has not bedded in yet, I think that's good as I have found in the past that as they get more miles on the clock, you start getting a better mpg. Also I have not had a real motorway run yet, just tootling around on A and B roads.

Got a diesel C4 coupe after a petrol C2 VTS, worst decision I ever made, prefer the noise of petrol engines, the non greasy fuel and the cheaper price

I would go with the diesel. Better fuel economy and easier to drive in my opinion, as AndyG mentioned above its effortless. It isnt loud for a derv either, so I think the whole diesels are dead loud doesnt apply as much here. Also, if you want to rag it round like a maniac your MPG will still be decent, if you rag it in a petty then you'll feel it at the pumps. The derv has the best of both worlds.

Deffo agree with above, the hdi units are very refined for diesels, best in their class.

I would say Diesel every time, If your into Performance modding i guess the petrols are easier to find parts/mods for. But honestly if its a run around for the missus and the kid go for the diesel

to be honest if i was to mod it your looking at better gains with the diesel having a turbo than the non turbo petrol models
