  • Mag mount aerials

Perhaps the younger generation (in my case younger than 50) can help me here?

On a scale of 1 to 10 how cool (I'm not even sure if that is the right word, nowadays!) is a magnetic mount aerial (antenna) on one's vehicle.

I only ask because I am getting poor reception on my Pure Highway DAB radio using the supplied self-adhesive window aerial and it's seems I might need a mag mount external one.

There must be a few CB enthusiasts amongst the DS3 fraternity using mag mounts, or is CB radio now confined to truckers and Yank car owners?

You can only have CB if you get the trucker belt buckle, some boots and a ten gallon hat to go with it!

I dabbled in CB in the 70s but it seemed to be overwhelmed by slightly dodgy Yank car owners and travellers. The level of educational attainment of the average CB user seemed a bit low, so I contemplated amateur radio for a while.

Anyway, got my magmount aerial for the Pure Highway DAB radio and it has improved the signal no end. It's fairly unobtrusive - I'm not particularly happy about the lead trailing across the roof but I have a black roof so it's not too obvious. I run the lead down the rubber seal of the passenger's door and then pushed it under the trim and then under the carpet beneath the passenger seat to the radio fixed (by blu-tak at the moment) to the centre console, just in front of the gearstick.

Looking at the car as another driver I would wonder if it was smokey in a plain brown wrapper (CB speak - see, I remember!).

Reminds me of the classic film Convoy....thinking about it I wouldnt mind watching that again!
