What this man said, that is the reason why the system fires back up when you open the door so you don't leave techincally on unattended.

The reason for the Air con is simple, there is not enough charge in the system to cope with the extra power demand at that point, which is why the engine comes back on. The system is designed to be 'green' but not at the expense of comfort for the driver.

Surely the whole thing shuts off when you take the key off. Why would you be opening the driver door with the key in?!

The engine starts up when the passenger door is opened as well. There has been plenty of occasions where I've been dropping people off or picking them up and the engine has fired up, even though I don't want it to.

I suppose that if I was ever the getaway driver for a bank heist, as soon as my accomplices opened the door to get in the car, we'd be ready to drive off. Except I'd probably forget to unlock the doors after they have automatically locked. And I wouldn't get away very fast with my e-HDI engine.

Unless you disable this by holding down the lock button on the dashboard for a few secs!

It would make it a lot easier for the police to open the doors once they did pull me over if I had disabled auto-lock.
