  • Scary grumpy salesmen!

Before ordering our DS3 this week my partner and I visited our local dealership and made a rapport with a sales guy. We had one test drive and visited him 3 times in total taking up about a total of an hour or so of his time. Due to hectic time constraints with work we sat down this Sunday and decided it would be our only chance to buy so rang the dealership to find the salesmen not in work. I explained we wanted to buy right now, gave another guy the spec and said "give me your best offer". He came back with a highly inflated price so I rang around about 5 other dealers and said the same, "What's your best...". I didn't pit the dealers against each other but simply took the best price. Incidentally £40 a month cheaper than my local place!!

So today I thought out of courtesy I would ring the salesmen and explain we were no longer looking (he had been trying to ring us since monday..). Well.. I wish I hadn't... his first response was "WHAT!" and then he proceeded to have a go at me saying I had wasted his time with all the visits. He was quite aggressive and obviously angry. I was quite taken back with his unprofessionalism. He ranted on questioning why this and why that. I explained his dealership was way above the others and our time constraints... Well it all ended with a "Whatever.. and bye... then he'd gone!

Grumpy plonker! Does he realise now I can never take our car to be serviced there. Would you trust him?

Still... at least I am getting a brand new DS3! Wooohoo!

We've been saying it for ages about some Citroen dealers. don't know how they keep the franchise, apart from doctoring the customer surveys. Luckily there are blokes like Biggy around.

When I walk into my local dealers there's missing ceiling tiles, wires hanging down, stains everywhere and staff that are polite but in the same way that checkout people are, i.e. no eye contact and they look right through you.

I know that I pay through the nose for the service on the Lexus but at Lexus Hull they practically throw petals in your path when you walk in and the fresh coffee is in your hand before your backside hits the padded sofa.

Ah, Citroen - if only... (Seriously though, it doesn't bother me too much having bought a lowish spec DS3 but if I ever bought a top spec DS5 or similar they'd need to improve a lot if I was paying that money!)

It's a shame that one person can damage a dealership so much. It happened to my dad when looking for his E-Class. Paying that amount for a car, you obviously want to get the best deal so he went to a few dealerships. Paul at Merc Whitefield (near Bury) gave us the best service I've ever known with car dealers. Nothing was too much trouble (and trust me, my dad is trouble when buying a car) and he kept in touch with updates about build progress, went through an hour long demo on collection then phoned quite a few times after my dad had been driving the car for a month or so, just to check if everything was ok and if he was happy.

In contrast, Rashid at Merc Bolton was a complete knobend. A stereotypical salesman. My dad phoned Bolton and left a message for Rashid to say he'd decided to go with Whitefield; very sorry, thanks a lot for your help etc etc. Rashid phoned our house and started having a go at my MUM, who he had never even met, saying how much we'd wasted his time and how much he'd gone out of his way to get hold of a car. Needless to say, he got a rather strongly-worded complaint letter from my mum and we tell people to avoid that guy if they're going to Bolton. As far as I know, we never got a reply to the complaint which I thought was a bit unprofessional.

I'm really happy with BCC Bolton (used to be Lythgoe). The DS3 is the second car I've bought from them and both salesmen I've dealt with have been superb. I got the same sort of service from Steve there as my dad did. He even told me that if I'd taken some shots of the DS3 to let him know and they might want to have some off me. Need to get on that actually!

                Hi,
I have only been a member for about 2 weeks. Just picked up my DS Sport on Monday. " WHAT A BRILLIANT CAR ". I live in Australia and my experience with the dealer has been fantastic. Sorry to here about your treatment. If it was me I would write them a email detailing your experience and salesmans name. Usually on there website they have a email you can write to and it is usually the principle reponsible for dealership. If the dealership has any bollocks they will get rid of him as it is definitaly bad for business. Business is not just about selling the car it includes the servicing aswell.
I did this with a car a couple of years ago. I was buying another car , the salesman offered me $21000 for my trade in. I walked away. Wrote an email to the dealership telling them, what I thought of them and that they were screwing me over ( Frontwards aswell as backwards). Next day received a call from the owner of the dealership asking me my problems. We ended coming to a agreement and he gave me $24000 for the car.
At the end of the day nothing might happen and you know to steer clear of the dealer. However they may ring you up and make you a offer you cannot refuse.

i changed dealers, not cause they were rude, they tried a lot of car dealer tricks on me which i didnt like too much. they were quiet a small place and said it was gonna take quiet a few months for delivery, went to another place and got it in half the time. They weren't so pushy, i work in retail and dont get commission so hate pushiness

Same here but I'm supposed to be pushy lol. Customers appreciate it when you let them take their time and they know you're not just forcing people to buy anything.

Very true and I totally agree with that and I enjoy taking time with customers as I'm lucky to work for a smaller dealer where I can rather then being rushed to 'deal' by management.

But the process is a two way street and I will be the first to admit that I have screwed over by customers many a time. Had one customer cancel an order on a vehicle a week after it was ordered claiming he had lost his job, we had spend over 3 days and two 24 hour test drives before we got to the point of ordering. Now I'm not a hard-nut by any means and I took him at his word that he would be unable to afford the car. Later I found out from a contact that he had been in else where and did a deal! He saved less than a tenner a month, which as you could guess, annoyed the hell of out me because of the cheek of it, and all he had to do was ask and I'll sure we could have sort it.

In response to the OP, granted I don't know the full story, but I can understand the salesman's point of view. He took the time and effort to make sure that you were happy and you didn't give him the chance to offer the deal, I know that someone else gave you numbers but as far as the dealership would have be concerned you were his customer and he should have been the one to offer figures, the other salesman most likely wasn't bothered about giving you a good deal as he wasn't going to get anything out of it. Understandable your salesman was upset as you told him that his dealership was the best of the bunch, but you gave the him impression that price was all that mattered and the service he offered was not.

Now I know that I'm going to get some flak over this post, but it is hard work doing what we do and when you get slapped on the face it does kind of sting.
