No, not bitterness, just sadden that people have lost the art of talking to other people.
You as the customer expect the network to be here and offer all the services, but with the way things are going the network can no longer survive as it will no longer be able to support it's self. All that will happen is the local networks will collapse and you will be leave a few large outlets designed to turn churn out cars. I understand to need for people to feel like they have a bargain, but I get bored of people complaining later down the line when cars lose value too fast, or the dealer cutting corners. Even wondered why this happens.
At the end of the day it's my customers that will lose out as smaller dealer, like myself, would no longer be in a position to trade, which would be a regret.
Still.... I know that we have argued this point before and it's clear that we will agree to disagree and lets also agree not too chew this old soup again....I should never have doubted the Lord of Bacon!!

I understand where you are coming from and i do hope smaller dealers do not die out, i really do! where else would i test drive? lolYou are very helpful on this forum and i'm sure people wouldn't want to lose that either. But as times get harder people look for alternatives to save money. Like i've said before, if the difference was a few hundred pounds between dealers and the internet route I wouldn't hesitate. But in my case it was £1000, too much to lose for me. But you are right, its old hat now!

What I find strangest of all is I got my car through the same dealer via an internet sale as I would have done had I walked in the Showroom - I did walk in the showroom and was told 'not a penny off mate, no one is discounting them, so which one do you want?' - followed by 'I'm a business man, goodbye wally' - then I went on http://www.newcitroendeals.co.uk/citroen_ds3.php got the same car some £1700 cheaper and was introduced to the same dealer!!!! So not only did the salesman lie but I got the same service, the same dealer, the same afterservice (which is superb) but I saved £1700.
Then I took Elect 3, to get £1500 deposit contribution, let the agreement commence then promptly paid it off - and saved even more as Citroen had put £1500 towards it!
I have spoken to the top man in the dealership as he is looking at an issue for me, and has not 'discriminated' against me for the intelligence to drive a fantastic deal......I even mentioned it to him and he said people choose how to buy from them, different types of consumers, etc...
But I do resent the thought we should 'consider' the poor salesman commission - no! Do you consider whether the checkout operator is paid more in M&S or Asda, or do you shop where you want for whatever reason you want - of course you do and I could give a 1000 more examples! I would never ever, ever say to a customer or a potential customer of mine 'oh think of my poor commission please'...that would be unprofessional, and I would certainly never ever suggest someone couldn't get a discount somewhere else if they could (sackable offence in my opinion)..
So let's put some numbers up: List minus about £1700 via the Internet minus around £1200 for paying off Elect 3 (didn't get the 'whole' £1500 benefit into my pocket as there is a little interest penalty for paying off Elect 3 early, but hey I'm loads better off)...
I also don't buy the 'oh that affects the residual values' argument! Yes of course it does! But hey, we can stop that my making them all £100K each and the residual would be a whopping £60K! A Silly argument as clearly the lower the starting price the lower the residual but the lower the absolute amount lost...
Sorry, just don't get this 'think of the salesman' rubbish - people choose what they do for a living and how they choose to buy something. I have bought out of showrooms many times and on the whole the only time the salesman has called me after I've had the car is a while later trying to sell me another one - like I say I have received excellent service via the internet channel I went through to my cut price THP...
Anyone want the exact figures I got it for, just pm me.
Regards,
Clive.
ps if the local dealer dies out, the manufacturers will find another way to let us test drive the cars, they won't remove our ability to test them so we hopefully then buy them!Last edited by CliveP; 29-10-2011, 20:58.CL11 VEP 2011 Former DSport Plus 150THP Sport Red, now something else.......

Anyway the current model being looked at by the motortrade is the Tesco Model - This is a little scary as the whole setup is through the Internet only, no test drives, and so far no Part Exchanges welcomed. With the current climate of trading with the Internet getting higher figure turnover compared to traditional method I am genuinely frighten that this is the way the major marque will. If a marque can sell cars without having to subsidies the network demo stock in order do so then any marque will bite the hand off the person offering.
I know I'm fighting a losing battle on this point but maybe I should face up to the fact that all customers really want is the 'deal' and that the smaller dealer is going to die off in favor of the big outlets. Kind of reminds of people who complain about the their High Street dying but drive out of town to the large retail park. At the end of the day money always wins....I should never have doubted the Lord of Bacon!!

One question ........
If you were looking to buy an "all singing, all dancing" TV system with all of the extras and saw it in Curry's for £1000, and then looked on the internet (even on Curry's own website) and saw it advertised for £800, where would you buy it?

When I bought goods for our new house I dealt directly with the Comet in my local town, after a friendly chat the manager agreed a price for the lot (a dishwasher, washing machine and tumbler) which came in less then the Internet (yes I did have a look). After a second little bit of banter he agreed to pop them onto the lorry for free with the agreement that the driver got a cup of tea and a biscuit.
Yes there are bargains to be found, but sometimes it worth the effort to talk with someone direct. Look at it this way, some people with always fly economy and other prefer business class....I should never have doubted the Lord of Bacon!!

Contrast the situation in much of the rest of Europe, where people still appreciate (and patronise) small retail outlets of all sorts. Even the smallest village in France is likely to have its own bakery and butcher, not to mention a little garage tucked away somewhere keeping ancient Renaults & Citroens on the road.
We seem happy as a society to sleepwalk into a situation where a small number of massive retailers are allowed to corner the market, selling much the same range of stuff (so less choice, ultimately) at much the same prices, and conning us that we've never had it so good while they make mahoosive profits. And before anyone says it, I'm not blind to how competition between the big retailers has helped to keep food and other prices down - I'm just saying that if we always let our purchasing decisions be driven by the bottom line, ultimately we lose out on something less tangible - but no less valuable - that we'll miss when its gone.
