If you want to be able to get the best fuel figures you do need to drive the car with care. To gain the figures I mentioned earlier above on A roads I anticipate the traffic in front so I brake as light as possible and accelerate as gently as possible. I never drive above 2000 revs which actually return’s the best fuel consumption in diesel (3000 revs for petrol). As soon as I change any of this behavior there is a clear drop in miles per gallon. There are also other factors that pay a part if you have the air conditioning on for example, how cold the weather is and how long the journey is you are undertaking. Shorter journeys where the car does not warm up to its full capacity will run much richer.

At the end of the day you have to balance fun or economy. I found setting myslef a challenge to see if I could get even better mpg each week was also fun for a while.

Do you calculate your MPG or are you relying on the computer ?

I have done both and find that if I calculate myself the onboard computer is out by 2 - 3 miles.

The last time my Computer stated average 67 mpg (over a full tank) I actually got 58 mpg.

Still - miles better than the clio

Indeed - The guys at the petrol station no longer recognise me . They used to treat me like their best chum back in the day !

Ha! I'm on the Christmas card list of everyone at my local filling station - as a driving instructor, I'm filling the tank at least once a week.

Good figures Gents, but after driving diesels for years, I'm loving my 0-60 in seven seconds and getting a real 38mpg, loving it and don't care!

I'll be good when I retire! Maybe! As an AM is on my blow list when I give up work!

                      Regards,
