  • Premium unleaded only??

    Hi,

Just bought DS3Sport and noticed manual said should only use 98 Octane fuel?? Dealer had said this was not necessary! What are the views of more experienced owners?

    Thanks John

Some Users Have Experienced That Putting Only 98 In ( / 99 In Europe ! ) Increases MPG And Is Apparently Better To Drive Than Putting In The Cheaper Fuels?

Not So Sure Myself But I Know That Your Car Will Run Fine On Any Brand Unleaded At Any Octane Level

Where in the manual does it specify 98 octane? My manual just says "unleaded" for all petrol engines.

Edit: just looked at the latest version of the handbook. It says Citroen "recommends" 98 octane - only a recommendation, not a requirement.

Ours gets more MPG and feels perkier with v-power (shell's +99ron) than ordinary 95ron. As for the unleaded, there haven't been anything but unleaded for the past 15 years in Finland.

I was using the cheaper unleaded fuel on my thp engine.....I changed fuel recently to the higher octane fuel due to getting occassional loss of power....thinking higher octane would improve the loss of power i found it has mafe no difference !!!.

Mine seems to go OK on the ordinary juice.

I use both normal and super unleaded. Usually rotate between the 2.
Been told the higher octane produces a cleaner burn and leaves less residue so better for longer engine life
And there is definitley more "Twitch" from the engine when higher octane fuel is used
I use a drop of the good stuff when prices arent that high and for motorway use
I mean whats the point of a 0-60 7.3 second motor and sticking cheap old fuel in

                LOL

The engines are not so highly tuned that they require a higher octane. We don't drive F1 cars.

The purpose of higher octane ratings is to prevent pre-ignition ("knock") in high-compression engines. If too low an octane rating is used the engine management system will detect the onset of knock & retard the ignition to prevent it, which means that you may lose a small amount of power by not using 98 octane petrol. The wording in the manual - "recommend" - suggests that the difference is marginal. In normal driving, how often is the full power potential of the engine being used; for most drivers I'd suggest rarely, if ever.

Cars may seem to run better on more expensive petrol . . . placebo effect?

My old dad used to swear that his cars drove better when they were clean. Same thing!

Mine definately sulks if run on 95Ron. I only use Shell V Power now and the power delivery is smoother and the mpg is definately better.

When I picked up my car the guy at the dealers took me to petrol station to put some fuel in, but pump we stopped at had out of use on normal unleaded so he told me to put super unleaded in, so thats what ive used ever since.

Personel choice and every engine is going to be a little different one may run a little better on higher octane while another you could not notice a difference. I would say try different octanes for a couple of fill ups then use the lowest that the car runs ok for you. I use V power because I feel it runs slightly better and I can afford it. If money were tighter would use cheeper gas.
