Wheel spin

Hi all,


Thought I was just being a big heavy on the gas when getting out of junctions in a hurry, but my wife has been using my VTi 120 for the last week and yesterday she said that she really liked driving it (over her auto C3 Platinum) but wished the front wheels didn't spin so easily. Now I am wondering if it is both of us, the traction control (made sure it was on ie. light on off button is off and no light on the dash), or the brand new Nexen Neferas were on it when I picked it up. On other cars I have noticed a little bit of slip on the front wheels but then the traction control kicks in and deal with it but even TC light flashing I still have to come off the gas to get the wheels to grip. I am not talking about flooring it away from the light, but just when you want to get out of a junction in a hurry, I am starting to get nervous about pulling out and starting to wait until their is nothing in sight before going.

I suspect it is the tyres but before I shell out a couple of hundred on a pair of Michelins I though I would see if anyone had had issues with the TC on a 120.

To me it seems that the TC is too jumpy, comes on especially when pulling out of a T junction. The car really doesn't like accelerating from stationary unless the wheels are completely straight. I am on cheap-to-midrange tyres at the moment, but it was still bad with the original Bridgestone Potenzas.

I just go for it, but I'd rather spin wheels a little than have the TC thumping my brakes. Sucks that the VTi can't disengage it for more than 30 secs / over 30mph.

See with me it's almost as if the TC is not doing enough and I am talking about trying to sprint off the starting line, just getting out of a junction or onto a busy round about when I need to pick my feet up a bit.

You're on summer tyres, it's winter. Also not the best summer tyres to begin with. If you didn't have TC it sounds like you'd just be spinning up..which is just as slow but more dramatic.

Never had any issues with wheel spin in the DS3 or in the new C3 both of which are on Michelins and have more torque than the VTI. But anything below 7 degrees will reduce the grip available..if it's 2 or 3 and damp then you need to go easy. High performance summer tyres are a sticky compound that becomes harder in cold temperatures and grip suffers.

But this is not just a recent thing it has been since I picked it up and then it was dry and mid teens. The fact that it is not a particularly powerful version is what concerns me.

I would have thought that if the TC was broken/faulty there should be an error code or warning light, if there isn't I suspect it's the tyres. Have you checked they're inflated to correct the pressure? If they were fitted new they may be over inflated if the fitter wasn't too bothered to check

Ok just a quick update, I have had a pair of Avon ZV7s fitted to the front and even after only about fifty miles (so maybe not quite broken in) it is noticeable that I have more front end grip pulling away, I can still break them away but it is now more a case of wanting to rather than hoping not. Other immediate change is a drop in road noise, I will report back after a few hundred miles with another update.
