  • Petrol or diesel

    Hi guys,

I used to have a diesel hdi 90, but sold it when I was no longer commuting. Now we're looking at getting another as a joint car, but can't decide between a diesel or petrol. Mrs uses it to go to work twice a week, which is a 12 mile round trip through town. Then at least twice a week it's used to do a 40 mile round trip down the dual carriage way. Being a joint car it will also be doing all our day trips. We've managed over 12000 miles the past year in our astra. Does it sound like a diesel will be alright? Mainly worried about the dpf.

Hi and welcome back Sam. I've had my 115 eHDi for over 2 years and I'm only doing between 7 and 10K a year. Sounds pointless with not doing tonnes of miles but it has saved me loads in fuel, road tax (zero) and insurance. The 40 mile round trip on the dual carriageway should be OK to burn out the deposits in the dpf, but I just make sure I do a good blast on the motorway once a week/fortnight and that should be enough to keep it clear.

Hi I’ve got the 100bhp new diesel and do 20k miles a year. It’s great on my journeys of 200 miles a day cruising at 65 mph gets me about 72 mpg but for local journeys I’d rather have a petrol engine. It’s still cold after 8 miles. If I were you I’d get a petrol as it’s 4p a litre cheaper and the service intervals are greater also I love my diesel but am seriously considering a petrol next time! Good luck choosing!
