What is going on with exhaust.... ?

Had a Vti95 since June'11. Every morning I drop my son off at school which is located on top of a 30% hill. Car sounds goods until I get near the top and then .... bleh ... it suddenly turns diesel. What a rough sound, but as soon as I come off the accelerator it goes away. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

I'm quite paraoid about this, as I'm sure it has being making a 'popping' sound too (but thought it was in my head) until my son asked my why does it make that sound yesterday... I feel sane again.

Maybe It's Struggling Getting Up the Hill ?

It's already in second gear. Not struggling. It feels almost as though there is a buildup of pressure and boosh...out it comes. It is noticeably louder.

Oh and when I pick him up from school from work (when he car has been running for 15-20 minutes) there is no noise. Could this be an 'exhaust leak'? I've read it is more noticeable from cold as heat expansion can seal any gaps.
