Air-conditioning issue with recently purchased DS3 DSPORT

Hi all,

Sorry if this is the wrong place to post (please let me know if so and I'll move it!).

Bought a second hand DS3 DSport about 4months ago. 2013 registration with approx 50k miles on the clock.

It has developed a strange issue with the Aircon. When the car is cold I get about 5-10 mins for working Aircon. Then it cuts out. I've had a few people look and it doesn't seem to be out of gas. So far nobody seems to have identified the issue.

The cut out seems to coincide with the temperature on the dash dial reaching about the half way point. I've tested this by sitting in the car with the engine running (but not driving) at which point I get about 11mins of cold air. Whilst driving its around 5mins. It's definitely air-conditioned air coming out initially, as I tested it on the days when it was 30 degrees and humid.

Again, when colder I've checked to see if I can here the compressor clicking in (which it does). But when it's already warm, that doesn't seem to happen.

Anyone seen or heard of a similar issue?

Perhaps also worth mentioned, although it could be unrelated, but I had an issue with coolant/ expansion tank recently. The tank had a crack and the coolant got very low. Have since replaced the tank and obviously topped up the coolant. Was low again the other day and topped up again.

Update:

So I dint figure it out in September, and it got colder so didn't need AC. So just getting back to trying to figure it out.

Coolant leak was traced to a faulty water pump, so unrelated I'd imagine.

Had the car looked at again with definite solution. The garage told me the condenser was in bad shape, but had refrigerant in the system. They said they could replace it, but that might still not be the problem so could start running up a bill. I am looking to get this replaced anyway.

One additional symptom not mentioned above. When the cold air cuts out there is a noticeable increase in the humidity of the air along side a slightly musty smell. I am wondering if it could be the AC drain is blocked? I will see if I can flush this (assuming I can find it!) to eliminate this as the possible issue.

Id anyone has experienced similar I'd love to hear about it!

Ok, so I finally have a solution! After looking at several things (condenser, water pump etc.) I was eventually able to get my local garage to find the fault.

Whisky there was a leak in the water pump, this was not the main cause of the problem. Essentially there was a really fine crack in the plastic thermistor housing. It was only noticeable when the car had been warmed up (they just left it out of gear with the accelerator weighed down). It was only then that you could see a fine ksiy of coolant spraying out into the engine bay.

They replaced this and since then magically the air-conditioning is working again! I assume that there was some sort of override on the air con when the coolant system lost pressure to prevent potentially ok overheating the engine.

Anyway, just posted in case anyone else has a similar experience in the future!
