  • e-Hdi 90 / e-Hdi 110. Stop start thoughts or reviews

Later in the year I'm going to start looking into changing my 99g.

I fancy driving the 110 to see if the 6 speed with higher bhp means an easier drive. The range between first and second in the 99g is shocking.

I have recently noticed the new engines offer stop/start. Anyone running one? What's your experience been? And what mpg are you getting round town?

Stop/start wierd at first but once you know what happens its easy. Don't do a lot of queues so not noticed mileage diff. ehdi 90

Is there a correct way to actually use the system?

I mean other than at lights when you've got your hand brake on your sat in neutral?

the only other time I find myself using it, is if I put the car into neutral and just use the brake; on gradients you can still roll forward in eco mode.

I knock mine in to neutral coming up to queues or junctions and just keep it on the footbrake while waiting at lights or in long queues. Still shit on fuel though lol.

I have the 110 with the stop start. I hardly even notice it, just put the car into neutral and put the handbrake on at lights (engine goes off)... when lights change put car back in gear (engine comes onn) take the handbrake off and off I go.

I test drove the 90 and whilst it was still a nippy little thing I love the extra power in the 110.

One thing that I do find slightly annoying is having to change down to 3rd quite often in 30limits as the car only really seems to like being in 4th when you're doing at least 30 (not sure what the 90/99 is like).

That annoys be a bit as well. It feels okay when you're driving a bit higher than 30 (maybe 32 or 33), but I find that when I am at 30 or 29 the engine struggles in fourth and I have to shift down to third. Then in third it feels like I am in too low a gear. It's not that big a deal, but it can make driving less comfortable if you're following someone who is determined to stick on or below the speed limit.

I have the 110 with start stop, it certainly doesn't intrude and the moment you go to put it in gear its running. This is my second 110, first didn't have start stop and it seems over the last 6 months to be about 2mpg better than my last plus the stop time saving in fuel. Its interesting to watch how much time you are at a point where the system kicks in, I've had journeys where its in eco mode for over 15 minutes. Seems to be worth it to me, just wish my 110 had 130 :-)
I couldn't fix yer brakes so I made your horn louder!

What's the 110 gear box like?

Quite happy with the stop/start and the 6 speed in it as didn't order an eHDI but that's what turned up. Hit 7k now and on my last tank averaged just shy of 60mpg after working it out although I did deliberately try and drive it slightly easier.
Tend to go to 6th at 50 and over, 5th at around 40 when cruising

                    That's good. I'm only getting 60mpg on the 99g

Not that it makes any difference but quite strictly followed a running in procedure I found and it runs lovely and not a single problem, started off around 52 when I first got it and now with my normal driving it's around 55 and 60 if I drive sensibly, like a fine wine it's getting better with age, pity the squeaky interior isn't the same

My car tells me I've averaged 56.4mpg since new. When I drive more 'sensibly' I can easily get 60+mpg.

3rd gear is used for 30 mph zones, 4 for 40 and 5th for anything above. It's called eco driving. Cars have come on a lot since most of us passed our tests. The race to get your car into 5 th isn't needed. Your going to say it uses more fuel but it doesn't avg 54 mpg in a ehdi 90. Speed limits especially lower ones are there for a reason and before you ask I do go above the limit.

Driving instructor talk over, lol. But go on, try it for a week and see what happens.
