Certainly not! Engine breaking, when done correctly, does no damage to engines, gearboxes or clutches!

That wasn't supposed to be grammar nazism, I didn't even notice your mistake!

I was simply saying braking using the engine shouldn't break the engine!

would you hold the breaks in for several minutes in a 35% downhill? just asking
No, would have selected the correct gear in the first place. We are talking about on approach to junctions/roundabouts.

Well, technically the engine is braking then.

This is one of those threads that can go on forever like "Whats the best way to eat chips - with Gravy or Ketchup?" It's all down to personal preference and the way you have always done it. I was taught to go down the gears to slow the car for junctions but after 27 years of driving tried another newer way that works brilliantly for me.

Chips with ketchup - When part of a fry up
Chips with gravy - With a pie

                          See, No answer. lol :0)

AT the end of the day- engine braking is totally fine but use your common sense and do not rely on it to try and actually bring the car to a stop- brakes are for stopping, engine braking is for slowing down over a long distance.

Please God, let common sense prevail just for once!!!

I have done an advanced driving course. Teaches you stuff like corning at speed looking at apex points. Using the engine efficiently. using the gears down hill so the car doesn't run away from you. There also mad on cadence breaking!
