  • Electric DS3 anyone?

Set to be unveiled at the Paris Motor Show later this month - the DS3 'Electrum'. Totally rubbish stats though! Still, each to their own...

I do laugh with Electric cars, "oh it's much greener" people say ignoring where the power comes from when they plug in.

Did you know that is half of the motorists on the road today bought and plugged in an electric car there would be huge 'brown outs' as our current network wouldn't cope!

Want! I do understand i am the only person on here who is a fan of electric cars. To counter bigfeets point, the amount of electricity used to make diesel or petrol, store then sell etc is huge. Most people will likely charge at night as well when there is a huge lull in electricity usage. Cheaper overnight electricity means cheaper driving so most people would do it i reckon.

Im not a fan of electric vehicles because i have any pretenses about pollution and all that rubbish, i like them because i hate spending 10% of my wages on fuel, i love the idea of pushing technology forward (ICE are old hat) and they honestly go like the clappers. I drove the renault Kangoo ZE and i reckon it could have my 90. It may not have the top speed but hey its a van lol. The Renault Twizy i drove was also lots of fun, like a safer and cheaper alternative to a scooter with no noise, no petrol fumes and a linear acceleration that could beat any auto transmission cause it has no gears! I wont be getting this car though, 75 mile range would be fine for commuting to work but i dont need a car so big for commuting, i need it for cross country trips and would rather get something fun and small like a Twizy or a Renault Zoe. All i know is its a step in the right direction, with Renault going full on with electric and seeing success it would be dumb for citroen not to try otherwise theyl be left behind and end up like Peugeot (i know there related) who just got taken off the stock market they are performing so badly!

Electric cars. The Emperor's new clothes. They make no sense on any level, and they won't until battery technology makes a bloody huge leap forward (and despite lots of optimistic claims on that score, the scientists haven't yet been able to crack it, and probably won't any time soon).

And Biggie's right, the claims of the green lobby for electric vehicles are laughable when you consider where the electricity that powers them comes from, and when you then factor in other elements like the added weight of lugging all those inefficient batteries around, and the need to replace the batteries at regular intervals. Helluva lot energy wasted in that process, believe me, not to mention all those heavy metals (mercury, lead, cadmium, lithium, nickel) that need to be recycled. As if.

          Pah!

I dont get why they dont fit a small derv generator to elecrtic cars to charge it a small generator running at a constant speed only when the battery gets below say 10% to bring it back up then like a real engine quick refuel infnate range no new infrastructure required. That said day in 75 miles would work for me but id need to hire a car to go outside the county or visiting my sister would take days even leeds to Doncaster and back would require a recharge

That's in effect what the Ampera/Volt does (although it uses a petrol engine to recharge the batteries) - but then you're still lugging around all that extra weight, still burning fossil fuels directly (via the donkey engine) and indirectly (via the electricity generating stations), you'll still need to replace the batteries after 4/5 years, and you'll still pay a whopping great big premium to buy one over a petrol/diesel equivalent. They just don't make sense!

This is why I prefer Renault method of leasing the batteries. If they go bad they replace them, like a mobile phone contract. I'm not going to go on and persuade people on a owners clubs for petrol and diesel cars, chances are your DS3 is new so you've already decided against electric. When you drive one then it will make more sense why I like them better than dino juice. Like I said its nothing to do with me being a greeny, cause I'm really not. Just think its a better traction method and love pushing technology.

The thing for me is that Electric is really just a stop gap to Hydrogen cars, once someone figures out how to store the stuff en mass then it's bye bye Electric cars.

That said have been told that we are only about 20 years until we all have Fusion Power!

My real concern with Electric cars is that pollution from motor vehicles accounts for such a small percentage of green house gasses (cows generate more in a year than cars) and all Electric Cars are doing is 'sweeping it under the rug' so to speak. Now I'm all for making cars greener but I feel that there is too much emphasis on motor vehicles and not the big picture which is a very narrow minded view on things.

What we all want is Citroen's C-Catus!

And that's only because the demand for cheap meat has forced farmers to feed their cows grains and soy instead of grass. That however is a completely separate conversation.

I can't wait for the day when my car has a solar panel on the roof and a collapsible wind turbine in the boot so I can generate my own power whenever I'm parked up.
