DS3 to get new 3-cylinder 'PureTech' engine... ...

Citroën is strongly committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and, to coincide with the Paris Motor Show, the Brand is launching a new family of 3-cylinder petrol engines named ‘PureTech’. The new powerplants, with a capacity of 1.0 and 1.2 litres offer maximum power of 50 and 60kW (68 and 82hp). They deliver extremely low fuel consumption of between 65.7 and 62.8mpg (4.3 and 4.5 l/100km) and CO2emissions of 99 to 104g/km. The VTi 68 powerplant will be available in the C3 and the VTi 82 in the C3 and DS3.

Not sure if/when we'll get the new engines in the UK. I guess the new VTi 82hp 3-cylinder DS3 engine sacrifices power for mpg. 62.8mpg is an extremely good figure!

Also ; I note that a DS3 1.4 EGS 5-speed (paddle shift - 95hp) box is available in Europe, Australia, Singapore, etc... but not in the UK??? Strange we don't have it in the UK. I guess there's a reason?

All we get here of course is the 1.6 VTi automatic with the (ancient technology) traditional 4-speed auto box. Personally, I would love to see Citroën develop a dual-robotised clutch system - much like VW/Audi/Seat's excellent DSG boxes... ... or even Ford's 'Durashift' box! Wishful thinking on my behalf... ...

Sorry Cyclone I disagree.

Mine was 99g emissions 90hp and 60mpg.
Now is 57g emissions 120hp and 58mpg.

It is great fun to drive and does not hang about.
Don't see why they need this new model considering the above. !

Looking at some numbers, allowing real world figures to be 80% of advertised, petrol costing 136.9 and diesel costing 140.9.
Silly little petrol will be 50.24 mpg = 12.38 p per mile
Diesel will be 57.6 mpg = 11.12 p per mile

If you do 10k in a year you could save £126.72. And have a weedy 1.2l engine.

Spot on Joe - I get that with the 1.6 and zero road tax - why make something smaller that does the same?

Interesting you say that Chris - it crossed my mind the other day that if we al were to go to zero road tax cars, they'd have to find a way to re-introduce road tax! Like they don't have a big enough % of income tax of hard workers already!

Clive, if you look after April this year I believe you'll notice changes in the banding - they will change the starting/ending points of each band to catch people out, which basically puts your car into a different category, possibly a paid category...

that's my understanding of the road tax bands anyway - what's frustrating is that despite pushing us towards being greener, and directing the nation to purchase low emission cars - is that the goverment inevitibly get our money out of us one way or another when they amend the bandings. Moreover I personally think the push for economic cars is a load of rubbish - you get a pat on the back for a few years and get shafted the next (assuming you keep the car)

It's just an excuse to squeeze more money out of us, using issues on global warming as a contributing factor - I'd like to see what they will do when cars eventually become so negligible to pollution, that taxing based on emissions becomes null and void; what excuse will they use then...GPS/Mileage based tax - you bet it's bloody coming, as they're already doing it through the back door with insurance companies; I bet £100 that 10 years from now, a black box will be compulsory!

I hate this country with a passion - all I've ever known is the goverment to take money at every corner, and recently 'global warming & being green' seems to be the driving factor - great to reduce emissions as a country, but it just seems that we're coughing up more than our fare share, with non of the lasting benefits - take bin collections for example, we now rely on 4 bins in local households near me - we do all the splitting etc which is great, so you would have thought we were contributing to savings for our local authority...but then your council tax doesn't go down.

According to an Autoexpress article a review of road tax will be 2016. My road tax is nil at present but as manufacturers are aiming for 89 grams or less my car will soon no longer be exempt.

I drove the 208 in the PSA 1.2 VTi guise and it flies along, much better than the 1.4 versions. It was so eager it was unreal and kept up with traffic easily. Unfortunately the engine note is quite infectious and trying to restrain yourself from giving it a good thrashing is hard, so bang goes the fuel savings, plus one cylinder less means a lighter engine and the lighter front end makes it dart into corners almost 205 GTI esque (if anyone is old enough to remeber what they are).
Will also make the DS3 more insurable for younger drivers perhaps?
