  • Is a THP remap worth the risk?

I'm sorry if it has come up on here before...

I'd just like to ask really, what do you guys think?

I mean reliability, problems with warranties, difference in performance.

I would love to have that extra hot hatch performance but if it means I have to fork out a couple of grand for a broken engine because quite rightly a dealer won't cover the cost, it makes it seem like an expensive risk!

Also, what does that performance boost feel like in real world driving? I'm so tempted, but guidance is something I wouldn't mind a bit of.

I'm pretty new to all this and love my THP so killing it isn't really something I want haha

By the way, I have the new ECU style so its not a simple OBD port jobby.

(Please don't kill me, I'm not trying to say I agree with fiddling dealers out of warranties because of my stupidity)

Hence why I'm asking I guess to see how likely it is, I will be forking out for repairs or anything due to not being covered.

Also, while I'm at it... could you just make it clear what will be void by remapping my car sorry for the long post!

Good post abovethresh. I'm in the same boat as you. Brand new THP, absolutely love it and wanting to weigh up pros and cons of it. I looked through old threads here and it's difficult to decide as there seems to be some contrasting info. The thought of a remap excites me, but not so much possible huge bills!!
Plus I live in Scotland so I dunno if it'd be easy to get this done locally with the new problems with remapping the new build models.
I'm not technically minded when it comes to these things ha!

Thanks! Yes, unfortunately ours would need a ECU pried open. I just want to have the power of the Polo GTI i tested and not need to have to hand my car back in bits with a bill. I love it and the power is brilliant but I guess my inner child wants that little extra

Had the car 6 months and got it remapped, couldn't imagine driving one now without it.

My engine blew after 16k but this was due to an engine fault.

Average MPG is around 30 with quite a few other mods.

The risk is all yours though, I haven't heard of any dealers being able to detect the remaps but there's a first time for everything.

Was your remap contributing factor to the fault? We have the new ECU's which require being taken apart, I just have visions now of being blamed for every engine fault under the sun due to a simple remap. I spoke to Jamie the other day and he said there would be a slight mark on the ECU where they have to pry it open. I would love to have it on, but be able to take it off and hand my car back no questions asked if I wanted to change it. I'm not on a lease but currently doing the PCP.

If I sold it back to the dealers to change it, what implications do you think there would be if they found evidence of a remap or ecu tampering? I don't think I could really get away with saying I know nothing about it.

No, the fault that caused my engine failure was the inherent fault with the THP engines.

Mines a 10 plate so was done via OBD, I can't comment on removing the ECU however can recommend Jamie over at SP - Very professional(until you properly start talking to him ), nice guy and will be able to baffle you with technical explanations or give you some plain and simple statistics.

Citroen could always do a reset on the ECU, you could always find a different dealer to the one you're planning on giving the car back to and ask them to flash the ECU.
I always ask my dealer to ensure the ECU doesn't have any updates applied to it when it's in for servicing/warranty work and haven't had any problems with them. Granted, it's obvious my car is outside of warranty but so long as it's nothing big they don't appear to be too fussed.

Again, in the three years I've had the car I haven't heard of anyones maps being discovered when they've taken their car in for the work.

As with everything I say though, it's down to you wether you do it or not

Cheers buddy! I will save up the notes and head over there at some point! I'm very tempted indeed. You only live once as they say!

(Sorry for the all crazy worrying questions)

Got mine remapped, while I still have 2 years of warranty...
No issues with the remap, other than the common THP issues, which I need to take my car in for repairs -_-

Are you going to take it off before you head back and get them repaired? I'm hoping they have fixed all the Pre 12 niggles as I haven't found any faulty 2012 models on here yet.. maybe thats a good sign? :P

I've got 11 months left on my warranty but I started to mod my car as soon as Forge parts came out. I took it to the dealers with them all in as well for the 2yr service. They just said 'You've been tinkering with your car I see'. lol
Waiting on the Milltek exhaust before I finish with a remap. Looking forward to it

Obviously i'm taking off the remap, as that could provide some issues warranty-related. Doesnt take too long (appointment due for tomorrow so).
