  • Do you or don't you?

Having been motoring for more years than I care to remember not that long ago that when buying a new car there was a period of running in. I even remember the days when I was very young of seeing notices in the back of car windows informing other drivers that the vehicle in front was being run in. In the last 4 years the information about running in has disappeared completely. It started with the salesman saying there was no need to run the vehicle in and even in the owners handbook the section on running in got smaller and smaller.

The days of having to keep the revs down and as a result the speed too as well as varying the speed on motorways for the first 1000 miles not too mention taking the car back to the garage after this period to have the oil changed and everything checked seems to certainly gone a long time ago.

On my recent purchase I have now noticed that the handbook does not even mention running a car in anymore. I don't know if its just me or do others still run their cars in. I know engineering , oils etc have improved vastly but to me taking things easy for them to bed in seems a sensible option certainly for the first 500 miles or so. There is a school of thought that its best to not worry about running in and that driving a car normally from the start may in fact be good and add better performance in the long run.

    So my question is:

    a) do people still run their cars in?
    b) drive them as normal from word go?
    c) another option?

I have been told by my dealer, as I too asked the question as to weather i needed to run my new car in or not that it was not necessary anymore. I have however been taking it easy, especially when the engine is cold because cars do need to loosen up. I have now done 1400 miles and am now driving that bit quicker!! Technology has certainly come a long way and long gone are the days when you see signs in the back windows of cars saying running in!

No, you don't need to run it in anymore. Not for a long time in fact last car I needed to "run in" was a 1987 escort mk 4, lol. Don't think it needed it then either.

Apparently modern diesels seem to prefer being driven normally from new.....

This sounds good advice. I run my diesel engines in on a similar way and they certainly seem to benefit from it

not the best advise to give "cruise at 80 for 15 minutes, cruise at 75 for 15 minutes, cruise at 60 for 15 minutes, cruise at 90 for 15 minutes, etc." so this guy is openly advises you to break the limits

Salespeople sell things, they don't engineer things.

The worst thing you can do is run a new engine at a constant speed for a prolonged period of time. How to break in an engine is a matter of opinion.

That said, even brake discs are 'broken in' at the factory. The whole vehicle will have been on a Dyno cycle at the end of the production line too.

That's assuming his recommendation is to do this on a public road
