It could be, and its fairly cheap to put a different one in.

It could also be the fact that the audio on your iPod is compressed whereas the CD isn't. You can lose a lot of quality when the audio is compressed.

You could change the settings on your iphone/itunes/possibly others to, to raise the quality of the music you add (less compression)

Also depends on the bitrate of the audio files when they were converted, 128, 192, 256, or near CD quality(approx 320).
