  • Winter tyres and a problem.

    Hi folks

Just bought 4 winter tyres (almost new Pirelli's) for £100 balanced and fitted.
They feel great but one of them seems to have a lump? Slight noise like going over a cats eye but nowhere near as much. Gets faster as the car gets faster obviously. Tyres look good short of taking the wheels off and looking in detail.

Come on you experts. I need to get to work tomorrow then to the garage at lunchtime (40 - 50 miles). Is it safe to do so?

    Thanks in advance

Is the lump in the sidewall? If so then don't drive fast with that tyre!!! A lump in the sidewall is dangerous, the tyre has weaken and is close to having a blow out. You need to take it very easy and have it checked out at the nearest tyre fitter straight away.

        Cheers

Took the car back in. They took all 4 wheels off and looked very closely at every tyre. Neither they nor I could see any problems. They re-balanced them, swapped front and back and problem seems to have gone away!

Am I right that winter tyres are noisier than ordinary tyres. I have swapped from the "Low Resistance" ones.

As far as I know there are tyres that do create a lot of road noise and that varies greatly with various road surfaces, if you've got used to the Michelin "low resistance" ones then am not surprised that you are hearing a differnce with the winter tyres as they will have a different tyre pattern and almost certainly a different rubber compound.
As you don't give the details of what tyres you have actually got it's difficult to find out anything about specifics for them

            Hi John

            Got 2x Pirelli Snowstorms
            and 2x Bridgestone Blizzards

Think the noise came from the Bridgestones

No expert on tyres but could you buy just 2 front winter tyres, if so would you really feel the difference.
