i have noticed this also ... but when i use the fuel gauge where my speed is that changes depending on if i drive like a div, uphill or down hill and so on ....

as soon as is it drops to the bottom block on the fuel thingi i just feed it with some more ...

That wont be doing any damage will it ? some people said that you should run it as low as possible so theres no rubbish fuel in the tank ??

I've never understood this rubbish in the fuel tank argument, if fuel tanks empty from the bottom where is this 'rubbish sitting' ? Surely if any were being put in the tank it would drain out with the petrol/diesel as you drive ?

I'd also be pretty pissed if the expensive clean fuels you can now buy contained 'rubbish'

The fuel is going through a strainer in the tank at the fuel pump, then another the main fuel filter, then another filter at the high pressure pump and another filter at the injector. I am most likely forgetting a filter somewhere too!

Ok, so those filters would stop any 'rubbish' reaching the injectors even if you ran out of petrol/diesel ?? Or am I being dense ?

Oh forgot the fuel does not drain out the bottom of the tank it is pulled from just off the bottom by the pump so anything heavy sitting at the bottom is going to stay there and anything suspended in the fuel would be there whether tank is empty or full and be filtered out. Would not stress about dirt, more likely to wax up your filter in winter.

Ok, fair enough then, I didn't know that I did know about the dangers of waxing up, luckily not been an issue with my 4 diesel cars to date, will be having a word with the Shell garage if it does happen !

                Cheers cyclone
