  • Auto lights playing up

The past two afternoons travelling home from work have been bright sunshine but whilst my lights are on auto they are staying in full headlights and not switching to the LEDS. Anyone have any advice?

Sounds obvious but there is no dirt or anything covering the light sensor on the windscreen is there?

Were you wipers on for any length of time? As this will make lights come on .

I have noticed this on mine, as soon as the wipers come on (when on automatic) the lights will come on as well.

So basically, 90% of the time in Britain your auto-lights will be on

Yep, if the stalk is set to auto and the wipers come on (I have auto wipers) after a couple of sweeps the lights will also come on. The lights will go off again once the rain stops and the wipers cancel assuming it's still daylight

I've never had the lights come on when the wipers come on (both on auto) on a bright, sunny day!

What I think happens is that when the wipers are activated in auto the switching threshold for the lights is raised, so the lights will come on with more ambient light. They will then stay on because there will be a fairly big difference between the "on" & "off" thresholds to avoid the lights constantly flashing on & off.

The only problem I've had with mine was when they came on in bright light & wouldn't go off. When I saw the enormous insect that had committed suicide right in front of the sensor I knew why!

Just to clear this up if the lights are in the Auto position and you engage the wipers the lights will come on after a set period of time as listed in the handbook.

No. What the handbook says is:

". . . or in certain cases of activation of the windscreen wipers". No mention of time.

That would be the 'certain cases' then

But seriously there is a timer which I think is about two mintues on normal speed not intermittent.

If auto lights on and wipers are either on intermittent or auto wipe the head lights will come on after a predetermined number of wipes, headlights will turn off after the wipers have remained stationary for a period of time.
