  • What collaboration would you like to see?

Many cars have collaborations, and the DS3 latest is with Benefit make up.

What do you think would work well?

I think a black and green Liam Doran/Monster Edition would be awesome! Black body, with green roof, mirror, sides etc. Green stitching to the seats, subtle touches that make an awesome edition!

                            Ok, I'm ranting again.

                            WHY THE MAKEUP/FASHION LINKS?!

Yes, some people love labels. Yep, some will spend lots of money on shoes/accesories to have as a statement piece to snazz up a wardrobe. BUT a car?! Huh...... would you not define your own style by the car you picked? Not by the weird tenuous link to a designer you've never heard of? But must be cool becuase they are French.

I knowwwwwwwwwwwww since the brand separation the DS are going for style and elegance over grit and a bit of rough. But isn't that what we need?

                            Such as......
                            Renault Clio Williams
The Clio Williams celebrated Nigel Mansell’s F1 title behind the wheel of a Renault-powered Williams. It gained a modified 2.0 16V engine taken from the anodyne Renault 19, producing 150bhp @ 6100rpm. In its purest first iteration, the car weighed just 990kg, with later models equipped with comforts such as door-mounted speakers and even a sunroof.

With a rev-hungry engine and talented chassis, it set the template for other fast Clios to follow.

                            Peugeot 306 Rallye
Peugeot’s Pininfarina-styled hatchback was already known for its sweet handling balance when equipped with a turbodiesel engine. When a two-litre, 167bhp in-line four-cylinder was added along with a closely-stacked six-speed gearbox, the resultant simplicity and great chassis fun echoed memories of Peugeot’s other chuckable hatchback, the 205 GTI. If you preferred a more comprehensive interior, the GTI-6 was the Rallye’s more civilised brother.

Mini John Cooper Works GP R56
With only 2000 ever made, the rorty Mini comes with an aero kit reducing drag by six per cent, ensuring both rarity and practical presence. It’s a stiff, hyper-agile car and with plenty of torque-steer and even more lift-off oversteer, the GP is something of a shock when you first experience it.

A strong contender in 2013’s eCoty, the GP was upgraded with six-piston calipers and 330mm front discs and reworked Electronic Differential Lock Control just a couple of the car’s main highlights.

                            Clio:
                            Renault Clio MTV Edition
                            Date: 1999
Special editions were all the rage in the nineties and Renault knew that, despite strong sales, the
Clio would have to stay ‘on trend’ – particularly in the supermini’s target youth market.
The MTV Edition celebrated the era’s obsession for ‘Music Television’. Exterior changes were subtle and mainly limited to badging and alloys, but inside there was also an upgraded stereo with a CD player, so music-loving owners wouldn’t have to fit their own.

                            Renault Clio Billabong
                            Date: 2003
While the Clio MTV appealed to music-loving youngsters, Renault also chased growing lifestyle trends with a tie-in with Australian surfing and sportswear maker Billabong. Branding throughout, unique colours and funky green seats were enough to ensure the new model’s popularity.
The fact that the car was available only with the 1.2-litre engine didn’t put off buyers; in fact, it suited the demand for a stylish supermini with super-low insurance. The idea worked so well that Renault revisited it in 2007 with Billabong’s main rival, Ripcurl.

                            Renault/Renaultsport Clio Gordini
                            Date: 2010
Ex-racing driver Amédée Gordini set up a tuning company after the war, and was hired by Renault in the fifties. His cars went on to win many races, cementing Gordini’s name in the history books.
The eighties’ Renault 5 Turbo was the first car to carry the badge, but the fiery Renaultsport Clio followed in 2010. It took the 197bhp Clio hot hatch and added an F1-style grille insert, stripes and a rear diffuser. Inside was blue and grey leather and a gloss black console. As with the regular Renaultsport Clio, it was a riot to drive, with pin-sharp handling and a thrilling, high-revving engine. Only 500 were made, each with its own plaque to mark its build number.

                            Renaultsport Clio 200 Raider
                            Date: 2011
The little-known Clio 200 Raider is one of the most exclusive Renaultsports around. The Raider name had first been used on 1990’s 5 GT Turbo, and while the Clio model doesn’t have the heritage of the Gordini, it’s rarer. Only 50 made it to the UK.
You could have Stealth Grey matt or Diavolo Red paint, with gloss black trim, leather Recaros, all the options and the Cup chassis. At the time it was the ultimate Renaultsport Clio, but it’s a rare find now.

                            Our 'gritty' legacy

                            Based on Performance
                            The Racing
Setting itself apart from the rage as the beefy big brother to the DS3 range this car had the spec and potential. Sadly for most, the looks and styling was blurred by the reliability and overall performance of the engine. That combined with the less than enthusiastic support from CUK about faults with the car left a bad taste behind for many. And the reputation for this new sporty hatchback reminded me of the scene in Santa Claus the movie. When the elves get to cocky with the machine they have made that makes the toy's from them, and without releasing it is sending out sub standard toys. Thus in turn leaving lots of unhappy children on Christmas morning with broken items.
                            200 UK release

                            The Loeb Edition
                            Only LHD
Basically the Racing just with different trim and stickers
                            200 made
                            Numbered signed plaque
Listed here becuase this could have been a game changer for the UK.

                            The Cabrio Racing
That's right, its's a Racing again. Slightly re worked engine I think so it wasn't the same as the first Racing and therefore leaving the exclusivity there - Meaning 210 Racing's weren't sold. Just 200 Racing and 10 Cabrio.
                            10 released on the UK.
Matt paint and a red stripe detail set this apart from the others and gave it it's own identity.

Special Editions - Same Engines in the range, different off the shelf trim combinations/extra spec
                            Black/White
                            Pink

Same Engines in the range, unique trim options/extra spec
                            1955
                            Red

                            Collaborations
                            Benefit
                            Givenchy
Coming soon - Ines de La Fressange

                            Celebrity Tie Ins
                            Pixie Lott
                            The Saturdays
                            Iris Apfel

It might just be me, but is this not getting all very samey samey? And at the risk of being un PC/21st century/sexst, are the special editions not a bit girly? I know with the branding taken off the Benefit edition for example can be a great looking unisex car - especially the grey and orange. But from my experience you get asked why you have made your DS3 look like a Racing when it's not (orange roof) Or you're worried that people may find out that the gorgeous red car you have was named after a blusher......

                            I don't know, just feels like DS's thinking in the boardroom went along the lines of;

'if we make it pretty, the female market will buy it'
Nice one Dave! Oh oh and how about if we tie it in with make up, allllllllll girls like make up right?!
Pretty much, I know girls that wear makeup *thinks*
                            We could add a cupholder?
Pahhhhhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! What? Don't be stupid. Make up holder. That's a USP. That will sell the car.

                            -_-

So if we are going style and elegance over performance, think Yves Bonnefont mentioned something along that line, yet we have a performance line that isn't designed with power in mind... Is there not more we can do with what we have?

To me the DS is left in the dark, way back it was said:

'The Citroen DS3 was the first car to be launched as part of Citroen’s new luxury ‘DS’ range, which now includes the DS4 and DS5. It’s designed to offer more style, more equipment and a sharper drive than the underwhelming C3 supermini on which it’s based.

And it’s done it with some success, too, as the little Citroen manages to be a credible rival to not only the MINI and Vauxhall Adam, but also more expensive rivals like the Audi A1. It’s a great looking car that offers huge scope for personalisation, ensuring it’s easy to tailor to your own personal taste'

But 6 years later, the DS is left in the dark and small things mean what it makes up with on looks, falls short on basic standard equipment!

                            C3
                            Interior options:
                            • Standard Ambience – uncluttered and neutral with yellow over-stitched upholstery.
                            • Metropolitan Grey Ambience – a warm and bright alternative, with soft colours and textiles, on the dashboard trim as well as the seat upholstery.
                            • Urban Red Ambience – a combination of dark and bright colours. The dashboard trim features red over-stitching and a red dashboard surround.
                            • Hype Colorado Ambience – features soft upmarket materials and special upholstery for a colour-contrast effect, and a two-tone leather-covered steering wheel.

                            Driving aids:
                            • Citroën Connect Nav (via the 7-inch touchscreen)is a new-generation connected satnav system that can be controlled by voice or touch from the 7-inch screen. It ties in with connected services such as TomTom Traffic for real-time traffic information, geolocation and price details for service stations and carparks, weather forecasts, and information on local points of interest. There is also an optional ‘danger zones’ function that provides visual and audible warnings of accident black spots in real time.
                            • Mirror Screen technology duplicates smartphone content directly onto the 7-inch touchscreen. Here, the driver can access their multimedia content by touch or voice recognition. Available with Apple CarPlay™, Android Auto (available early 2017) and MirrorLink®.
                            • The reversing camera, complete with parking aids, switches on automatically whenever reverse gear is selected, to provide visibility and positioning lines via the 7-inch touchscreen.
                            • Hill-Start Assist holds the car for two seconds on gradients of steeper than three percent once the brake pedal is released, to help the driver pull away safely.

                            Technologies for safety:
                            • The Lane Departure Warning System helps guard against driver fatigue and momentary inattention. If the car crosses into another lane without the indicator being activated, the system will issue a visual and audible warning.
                            • The Blind-Spot Monitoring System detects the presence of any vehicles in the driver’s blind spots. Warnings are shown using indicators built into the wing mirrors.
                            • Driver Attention Alert warns the driver when it is time to take a break – i.e. after two hours’ uninterrupted driving at speeds above 45mph, then every hour thereafter.

                            *CUPHOLDERS!!!!!!!*

Sounds and looks like a lot more than we got for the new 2016 DS 3.

Even reading the Press release from the new facelift launch sounds a bit drab:
"New DS 3 is more unique than ever in terms of personalisation possibilities, including options for the roof, body, rear view mirror housings, dashboard and gear knob. Customers can now choose from 78 body/roof colour combinations and four fabric roofs for the DS 3 Cabrio"

“The DS 3’s compact and dynamic body style, enhanced by chrome-finished signatures, makes it a unique, expressive and appealing car. These personality traits are underlined by its rear styling, notably featuring hypnotic 3D LED lights.”

"The Performance models are the dynamic and distinctive versions of the New DS 3 and DS 3 Cabrio. They feature all the qualities of these latest models and take them to new, previously unattained levels. Powerful and refined, they bring drivers incomparable at-the-wheel thrills and all new styling, while retaining all the DNA of DS cars.”

Ughhhhhhhhhh, I can't be the only on that wants to see something that whacks a punch!

Even the advertising since the split from DS has failed to conjure anything up, it used to be fun! It used to dare you to drive it. But now it seems like somewhere to store your briefcase. And inside that is a soggy cucumber sandwich because you are just trying to look the part. Don't forget though this briefcase is designer, becuase that's why you bought your DS3, to accesorise.

The Performance Black is a step in the right direction, the colours, details and snarling demeanor give it that edge. But we need something more that is gong to make people take notice. Not everyone who wants a special edition is looking for the perfect place to apply their makeup.

Anyway..... special editions that could have worked/could work?

WRC - well that moment has passed.
                            White DS3?
Small subtle WRC side decals/details - Circular red bull logo?
                            Design a slightly bigger spoiler?
Involve RedBull - redbull do some cool things! Extreme Sports sure beats makeup.
                            BEEF UP THE ENGINE!!!!!!

Lynx Africa?.... Red, black Green - the Biggy Special
                            My DS3R3... nearly....

You raise some fair points there Joni, the problem is that the marketing people at DS are working the fact that 70% of buyers for DS3 are female and then pander towards that market.

Granted we had a wee spark with the introduction of the Performance Line and the Performance (personally the names just confuse people!) but it makes more sense to tie in with more cool brands that make sense with the aspect that DS as a brand are going for. Think a Focal edition (an amazing french hi-fi brand) which is something to rival all the crumby Beats tie-ins.

DS is having an identity crisis at the moment and until PSA take more control and decide what they what DS to represent we are going to get more of these odd models.

In regards to a new DS3 the latest C3 is a good indicator to how a new model version of DS3 will shape up, but with the 3008 SUV being the first Peugeot to get the DS treatment (DS7) I fear that the new DS3 will be some sort of weird love-child of a 208 and new C3...
