  • Sticking injector? Can they be repaired?

    Hi everyone,
I suspect I have a sticking injector as Im only running on three cylinders and there's lots of white smoke out the exhaust that smells of petrol.

I thought the coil pack had gone so bought a new one but no different.
I took the spark plug out to check it and noticed it was soaked in petrol. I have checked the coil pack works with a spare plug and sure enough it sparks fine. When I had the spark plug out I noticed a hissing noise coming from the cylinder and see a lot of petrol in the cylinder and no residual pressure in the fuel system after a few seconds.

Hence why I believe the injector is stuck open, probably due to crap getting in the fuel line when I tried to change my HPFP only to realise I ordered one for the N18 engine and not the N14 that it needed.

Would the injectors need replacing or is the a way of cleaning them out? Also if they need replacing do I need to replace all four?

    thanks

In my experience, its rare for one of these injectors to fail.
My guess would be piston failure and the lack of compression is causing the un-burnt fuel within the cylinder.
    Check the compressions

Yeah will get an extension to my compression tester as it doesn't fit down the spark plug hole. The more I think about it the more it seems like head gasket failure. Will do a follow up once I've tested it

Ok done a test today and this particular cylinder is over 175psi? Where as the others are 125psi I definitely think it is an injector as when I turn the ignition on I can hear petrol leaking into the cylinder and it carries on until the fuel pump stops. I'm currently trying to remove the rail so I can get to the injector in question.

Injector dynamics can clean condition and flow test a set of injectors. Get all of them done as it is likely the others will follow soon. There are also some companies o eBay that offer a similar service.

The higher pressure could be due to the fuel filling the cylinder.
Sounds like you have diagnosed the injector correctly.

These are on ebay right now.

Get a second hand one. They work or they don't...
Don't bother replacing the seals. These high pressure injectors are a real pain to clean. I know of one company that does it (in the netherlands, not even in my country). Don't think it's worth trying to salvage it.

Hi just an update managed to buy 4 brand new injectors for £13 delivered yep deal of the century. Anyway I have fitted them and stopped the cylinder filling with petrol. It turned out that the HPFP had gone the way of the dodo so after replacing that aswell the car is now a different animal altogether. The car now pulls consistently through the rev range. Unfortunately the wife no longer wants the car so it's going up for sale soon oh well at least it's good to go for the new owner
