Nook's Cranny starts out very basic but goes through three main upgrade stages as your island progresses. The initial shop only offers a limited stock focused on tools, flowers, and basic crafting materials. To unlock the first upgrade, you'll need to meet certain criteria.
    Nook's Cranny (Initial)

When you first start your island, Tom Nook will set up a small shop inside Resident Services called Nook's Cranny. At this stage, the inventory will be quite limited. You can purchase seeds, tools, furniture, and a few basic crafting materials. Upgrading from this initial stage is your top priority.
    Nook's Cranny (Expanded)

To unlock the Expanded version of Nook's Cranny, your island must reach a 3-star rating from Isabelle based on its development. This means crafting items, decorating the island, and fulfilling other residents' requests. Once you hit 3 stars, Tom Nook will tell you an expansion is ready. The inventory and hours will greatly increase at this level, opening new options for collecting ACNH items and making ACNH bells.
    Nook's Cranny (Premium)

Reaching the final Premium upgrade for Nook's Cranny is another major milestone. To qualify for this, your island needs a 5-star rating. Beyond expanded inventory, the Premium shop stays open later each day and night. It also introduces the ability to buy limited and seasonal ACNH items using ACNH nook mile tickets that can be difficult to find elsewhere. Let's look at the steps to move through each upgrade stage.
    Requirements for Upgrading Nook's Cranny

Here are the main criteria and requirements for unlocking each upgrade level at Nook's Cranny:
    Expanded Upgrade

To get the Expanded version, your island needs a 3-star rating. To achieve this, focus on:
    • Crafting different types of furniture, fences, and other DIY items
    • Placing fences, furniture, flowers, and other decor around your island
    • Fulfilling tasks and favors for island residents
    • Placing different types of trees, flowers, and other scenery items
    • Donating bugs, fish, and deep sea creatures to the museum

Isabelle will evaluate your progress each day. With consistent improvements, your rating will rise to 3 stars and trigger the Nook's Cranny expansion automatically.
    Premium Upgrade

Reaching the top-tier Premium upgrade requires a perfect 5-star island rating. To get there, you'll need to:
    • Have a wide variety of fencing, furniture, and decor all over your island
    • Fill out your museum collections completely
    • Max out your island's bridge and incline construction
    • Craft a diverse set of DIY items and place them attractively
    • Plant trees, flowers, bushes and other scenery in a natural layout
    • Keep your island clean by regularly picking up items on the ground

Focus on beautifying every area of your island to satisfy the strictest standards. With patience and dedication, Nook will give your island the highest praise.
Tips for Earning Bells and Nook Miles

Upgrading your island to unlock greater features at Nook's Cranny requires a substantial investment of bells and nook miles. Here are some effective ways to start stockpiling the funds and tickets needed:
    Sell High-Value Items

Valuable bugs, fish, and deep sea creatures can sell for 10,000 bells or more each. Catch exclusive critters during their active seasons whenever possible. You can also craft and sell hot item recipes from Nook's Cranny daily for greater profits.
    Use Nook Miles+ Rewards

Completing everyday Nook Miles+ activities like interacting with residents, planting trees, or catching critters rewards you with miles. Save miles to spend on ACNH nook mile tickets which can yield rare island treasures for high resale value.
    Sell Turnips for Bells

Every Sunday, buy turnips from Daisy Mae early in the morning. Check prices throughout the week using online trackers to sell for massive bell returns on island hopping visits. With patience and luck, turnips can make you millions.
    Display Rare DIYs and Items

Show off seasonal or Celeste-given DIY and item recipes through the Nook Shopping kiosk. Other players may pay generously in bells for rare finds to complete their collections faster.
    Post "For Sale" Ads Online

Advertise your extra real and assessed ACNH fossils, art pieces, gold nuggets, star fragments, and Animal Crossing items online. Savvy buyers will pay top dollar to finish their museum exhibits without duplicate grinding.
    Invest in Your Island Development

While earning currency, focus island progress daily through manual tasks like planting trees/flowers, decorating, crafting, and fulfilling resident requests. These easy chores all contribute points towards raising your rating. Some major construction projects that help include:
    Build Bridges and Ramps

Open up your island layout for convenient travel between areas by constructing bridges over rivers and ramps up cliffs. The infrastructure boosts your rating significantly.
    Add Street Lights and Hydrants

Create inviting nighttime walks around your island by placing street lights and fire hydrants along paths at regular intervals matching your theme.
    Craft Street Furniture

Make public gathering spots more welcoming using DIY street organs, snack and drink machines, park clocks, and other interactive furniture lining plazas and beaches.
    Expand Island Design

Constantly evaluate untapped areas to cultivate new orchards, gardens, picnic spots, or recreational spaces. A vibrant, lived-in island reflects well-come evaluation time.
    Maximize Your Rating Potential

Don't get discouraged if hitting 4 or 5 stars takes dedicated effort over weeks. Isabelle's criteria become stricter at the upper limits. To optimize your chances, focus development in these key areas:
    Balance Scenery and Infrastructure

Place furniture, fences, and decor attractively while leaving room to guide foot traffic naturally between areas using paths.
    Ensure Island Cohesion

Blend different themes together cohesively like an orchard/farm transitioning smoothly into a garden with matching fencing and plants.
    Properly Place Trees and Flowers

Arrange vegetation clumps realistically following rules of varied heights, colors, and densities for maximum natural beauty points.
    Keep Your Island Tidy

Pick up any dropped items, weeds or materials daily so Isabelle sees only your intended decor in place.
