Tried various stubby aerials and all degraded reception, at least where I am, far too much.

In the end I shortened the OE aerial by about half. Perfect reception and a 'bee sting' look.

What did you do - remove the end, cut some of the length then refit the end piece?

I tried a stubby from citroen which was poor, also 1 from a S2000 which wasn't great

Pull the end off. You might have to dip it in hot water first to soften it if its well stuck. Using a junior hacksaw cut in half and trim the copper wire that's wrapped around the fibre glass mast.
Push the end back on, job done !
