  • Repairing "damage" from roof vinyls

OK, this is my first post here so treat me gently please!

I recently bought a three year old DSC3 DSport 150. Loving her so far. Red with black roof. Very subtle! So I took "Red Baby" for her first bath today. Whilst scrubbing her roof I noticed that she must have had roof vinyls fitted previously. When the strong sunlight caught her roof at certain angles, there was clearly a pattern there, with patches that were slightly darker and lighter. It was clearly a pattern rather than random patches.

It's hardly noticeable really in most lighting, and I didn't notice it when I bought her. Is there anything I can do, eg polishing, which will gradually reduce the pattern effect over time? I don't really want to add more vinyls as I love the plain black roof. I won't love her any less if I can't do anything about it.

    Thanks in advance.

Hi Duddon. Would suggest Autoglym Adhesive and Tar remover. A quick wipe should sort it.

Sounds more like sun fading to me rather than adhesive residue!!

            Welcome to the club

Without any pics I'm not sure but if tar remover doesn't get it off then most likely it will need a machine polish to smooth out the surface of the paint. I'm sure Andy will be along shortly to advise.

Only a few hours late, apologies.

I would start off with the easiest and work on a trial and error basis.

Firstly have a go with tar and adhesive remover as Chris stated and see if that works. Spray onto roof out of sunlight, leave for a few minutes then wipe with a lightly moistened mf cloth.

If no luck then as Mark quite rightly suggested, go to a clay session. Bar or mitt/towel, the latter being the most easiest of the two.

Still no joy then Patricks recommendation of a quick machine polish WILL work guaranteed.

If you require a hand locating specific products then please don't hesitate to ask.

My three lads have done me proud with their recommendations 😉

This is how good a machine polisher can be. This took me 5 minutes per headlight today on an old Ford Puma

Many thanks for the replies. Will follow the suggestion of working on a trial and error basis starting with the easiest.

OK, the tar and adhesive remover didn't work. So onto the clay next. It's a bit of a novelty having a car that I actually want to clean. My previous cars; Focus Estate and Peugeot 206 SW were always filthy and didn't seem to mind. "Red Baby" though sits there on the drive and demands to be cleaned. She's also got a good few new stone chips thanks to some lunatic bikers spraying gravel at about 100mph.

Thanks for the link on using the clay mitt. Unfortunately it didn't work, although it did remove lots of other, almost invisible, muck. So it's on to the machine polish. Are cheap(ish) machine polishers worth bothering with or would I just be better off getting it done professionally? I should add I'm not great at doing practical stuff.

                        Thanks.

Hi there. Machine polishers, albeit decent ones will set you back, with pads and compounds around a couple of hundred pounds.

Is there no kind member with all the gear near you that can machine polish your roof for you??
