I paid a mate to chip my PS2 way back when for the same reason

You got done mate, you didn't need a mod chip to run 'backups' on PS2. You could use a modded memory card and an original PS1 game and then boot games from the HDD. I had that but it was a pain in the ass - my mate fitted the chip for a few beers and it was easy going thereafter !sigpicComment
