  • Dash mounted 12v socket

Got fed up with cables dragging about in the car - the pics tell the story.

Only involves drilling one hole in the back of the useless cubbly hole near your right knee. Socket is mounted in a painted piece of ally from me workshop attached to the top of the cubby hole with adhesive pads

Cable and ducting threaded through from the radio aperture by removing radio and two trim panels above the foot wells

Power taken from the black and green fuse block in the glove box fuse compartment, earth connection on a convenient bolt just behind the cubby hole

now I can play with me Android apps - messin' with GPS speedos presently

As always this is just a post showing what I've done - I have no intention of drawing 20A from that socket - any mods you do are up to you of course

I've done a similar thing except I used the add-on USB box, This gives me the USB socket to use for a stick or to power my Nokia X6 plus it also gives me a dedicated Ipod connector.
This box is quite small and still leaves some space for small items (credit card wallet etc)

Hi John - what mount is that for your phone, and where did you get it from?

All mounts are Brodit, they do a range of brackets for the DS3 and mounts for most devices

How does the USB box connect into the car John?

The website says the brackets wont damage the interior but I'm a bit sceptical reading the description of how you fit them...

              What's your experience John?

I think I'd be interested in the front A pillar mount

There is a small self-adhesive pad on one leg of the bracket to stop it from working loose, other than that they just clip into place, from my experience the centre console mount is dead easy to fit, the A pillar is a bitch as the plastic cover is quite flexible, but on the whole am very satisfied with them

I can vouch for Brodit mounts, have used them in my last 2 cars. They fit easily and require no drilling and cause no damage to the cars interior. Also if you change your phone / mp3 player then you just buy a holder for the new one and fit that to the mount in the car, simples
DS3 Racing, also available in White!!!

Its worth going onto the Brodit site to find the part numbers for what you want and then doing a websearch for best prices as different suppliers discount different brackets

                          @john55810uk,

Does the USB box give you control of the iPod with the steering controls?

Also, what GPS speeo app is that you're running -I like the look of it!

The GPS is Ovi Maps on my Nokia Phone (an X60 but is the same on a range of other Nokia's)
At the moment I have some control of the Ipod from the steering control, I think that there should be more but as I never paid to have the USB box activated am living with what control I do have until the cat as at the dealers again.
But the Ipod plays thro the stereo, traffic reports still work and pause the Ipod and I use the USB connector to charge my phone (the Ipod also gets charged)

So does the USB box need a dealer to activate it for full functionallity? Was thinking of getting one and installing it myself.

Are there any decent aftermarket solutions for us 'poor man' screen/non USB folk?
